does anyone know why team users disappear from time to time ? rilian,According to post 669704: After 3 years of inactivity the accounts are deleted. Upon the account deletion all the data related to the account is deleted as well to comply with GDPR. If the volunteer was in a team the contribution remains with the team. The teams are not auto-deleted. If the account that owns a team gets deleted, anyone can become the captain of such team and change the name, description, etc. Adri What a great way to memorialize any of the great volunteer crunchers that have been taken by the same diseases they crunched and fought so hard against...deleting their accounts. Pretty hard to stay active when you are deceased. Shame on you WCG for continuing to do this. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by bluestang at Apr 19, 2024 3:51:28 AM] |

Will ask there |

Hi all,
We want to acknowledge your concerns about the deletion of accounts. We do not manually delete anyone's account, but accounts are automatically deleted after 3 years of inactivity. We apologize for the inconvenience this causes. As adriverhoef highlighted, we are legally required to comply with these guidelines and could face fines if we were to change this policy. That said, we have been in conversation with contacts at UHN about the feasibility of selectively applying this policy to users who reside within the EU (where GDPR is applicable) but this discussion is still in the early stages. |

TigerLily there is no need to remove accounts, they can be just anonymized (as ClimatePrediction does) and also there must be at least email notification (or several) about that. That at least will allow to see historical efforts of teams and countries.
----------------------------------------In my team there were people who died of some diseases and they put their last efforts to promoting volunteer computing. - I wonder how the researchers at krembil will feel when their research will be trashed after 3 years of inactivity. - So you (project admins) decided to remove accounts proactively even knowing that those users are from non-EU countries ? You were not legally required to do that, this is a lie. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 3 times, last edit by rilian at Apr 19, 2024 3:37:50 PM] |

No other BOINC project does this that I can tell.
----------------------------------------Using GDPR is a copout and IBM only implemented to cover their enormous wealth. This has nothing to do with GDPR as just by having the checkbox of Data Sharing option for users is enough. Just removed the script IBM implemented and save some dignity of those still left that haven't been deleted yet. |

Hi bluestang and rilian,
We agree that the policy is unfortunate and can understand that it has caused frustration. As I mentioned, we are in communication with UHN about changing this policy. As part of this greater organization, we need ensure that WCG follows the appropriate procedures when initiating a potential policy change such as this one. |

I'd love to see any GDPR deletion automation process be made smarter so that it only deletes accounts from EU member countries and not other countries. I'm pretty sure I've gone 3+ years inactive from WCG about 15 years ago or so before GDPR existed. Glad my account and stats remained.
