For what it's worth, it seems the download problems have subsided over night, no new ARP1 WUs though an occasional lonely OPNG WU shows up on one of my hosts...

So does this mean we're back to the alpha phase due to all the WU's hanging on the download? If you ask me, we never left that orbit...My comment above IS a joke and I'm kidding around, but the original question stands. Exactly what phase does Krembil consider WCG to be in at this moment of time? This was IIRC the third (3rd) time that such announcement was made in the last 10 months by WCG, so it is a bit hard to take this all that serious... ![]() Ralf ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by TPCBF at Apr 18, 2023 2:55:57 PM] |

It definitely feels like a Beta phase. Until they get more hardware to cope with ARP1 & OPNG downloads, they should consider releasing units in small batches to prevent the overload. It is better to spread the batches over, say, a week than to issue them all at once, swamp the system and have nothing to issue for another week. Mike Well, I am not sure about ARP1, but for OPNG it was already done long time ago (at least a year ago or more). If I remember correctly when new OPNG WUs generation is turned on and working it releases 1 or 2 small batches of new WUs every hour. So downloading input files for such WUs is also spreads in time. And for uploading there is a natural spreading happens on client side - even if host managed to got a relatively large batch of WUs it will upload computation result one by one (right after computation of corresponding WU finished - d'nt confuse uploading with reporting to DB/scheduler which can happen for many WUs at once). This is a way BOINC clients programmed. Only reason why sometimes we see huge amounts of stuck file uploads is because too many previous clients attempts to upload already failed, so they simply pile up in upload queue... But even with such "spreading" of load it is still not enough to unsure stable work of WCG upload/download server(s). |

It used to apply to ARP1 in IBM days. It was deemed unnecessary subsequently as they had the capacity. It should be reinstated by Krembil as they clearly don't have the machine capacity to cope with the sudden workloads that have occurred recently. Mike |

@ DosaLevente:
----------------------------------------Known issue at the moment. It's the same for all of us. No explanation of the problem from the WCG team though. Nothing you can do from your end. Stay calm and patient, and try not to cry WOLF ![]() [Edit 3 times, last edit by Grumpy Swede at May 2, 2023 6:00:47 PM] |

Let's see what we can figure out. Is there less WUs or are there more people.
Looking at the stats for the last two weeks (4/20 -5/2) MCM - https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewP...y.do?numRecordsPerPage=14 looks like it is pretty steady 600-750 not a huge variation SCC - https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewP...&numRecordsPerPage=14 This is a newly returned project so the numbers vary wildly, but yesterday was a high point of 460K OPN - https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewP...&numRecordsPerPage=14 They already announced they were winding down OPN and going to a steady, but small amount of OPNG. The list has a few spikes, but it looks like it is usually around 400K, but now it is around 150K-200K. So definitely less than normal OPN WUs. ARP - This project could use an update. Last we heard they were backing data to tape. No idea if they hit another bump or if that process is just taking this long. We keep screaming that they should be running just the ultras right now. Those 3 WUs would benefit by moving now that any other WU and should be prioritized, but this isn't happening. nothing is happening. |

It was a BIG mistake to announce that WCG had restarted. Now I have to shut down a machine for lack of work.
