Sgt. Joe; no slap at you here, but for average users this is all akin to metaphysics. Regarding most efficient way to run or hold on WU's...I've been here almost 3 years and have no idea of those most efficient methods. The average volunteer won't either. We load and go what we can, when we can, on whatever hardware we've got available. I'm not running high-end servers, or some of the other 'uber-hardware' some are, so limit my downloads to about 32 WUs across 3-4 projects at any time (so about 0.6-0.7 days worth max at one time....sometimes less with WCG issues choking off downloads or uploads. If holding so few jobs is hoarding I'm at a loss to justify even participating to run 60-80 WUs per 24 hour period while the 'power crowd' is holding onto far more work than even they can process in the same time period. My lone machine runs 23/7 (1 hour rest break), and every morning I can send back my small contribution, as well as through the day if WCG is running right, and I do my part to link up, send/receive WU's, and go about life. If anything the high-end crowd need to not hold so many jobs at one time, that other more humble users can take a bow once in a while. Good feedback. In no way was I trying to disparage any user. I always hope the process is simple enough so the set and forget people can have confidence in their contribution. I run all used equipment, none of which is state of the art. I am sure you are not hoarding any work units and trust your contribution of whatever size is appreciated. Anyway, metaphysics is way too complicated for my tired little brain. Cheers

Now with the distribution of ARP1 WUs, the download problems are back causing that machines run dry because of the downloading troubles. I do not seen to be having trouble downloading ARP1 tasks. But I am currently having trouble uploading the results. They do go up, but at about 32KBps even though my data link usually goes at 9375 KBps (fibre-optic to the home Internet connection). I attribute this to US export control at the border from USA to Ontario, Canada. ;-) ![]() |

I attribute it to lack of capacity at Krembil but then I am just guessing. Sure would be nice if someone from Krembil chimed in. Cheers Edit: SCC units seem to have become almost as scarce as hen's teeth. MCM is at least bordering on adequate. Cheers

Sgt.Joe:
Edit: SCC units seem to have become almost as scarce as hen's teeth. MCM is at least bordering on adequate. Here it seems that there is no 'real' problem getting SCC1-tasks, as I have been receiving about 15 tasks per hour across two systems. In any case it's quite easy to fetch ARP1-tasks these days. ![]() Adri |

By the time they get to the midwest in the U.S. they have used up their supply. ![]() Cheers

It's nearly impossible to keep my four machines fed with SCC units. 75% of my cores will be moved back to folding@home later today (again).
----------------------------------------This is no fun anymore. We're dealing with an organization (Krembil, UHN, SharcNet, someone else?) that truly doesn't get it. They have no business running a large distributing computing project like WCG. Download/upload errors are back again. My machines are frequently locked up now and I have to constantly retry the transfers. As usual, the problem started before a weekend. This has been happening for months. The ARP and OPNG projects look to be causing the problem. This should have been fixed by now by limiting how much work for those projects is available for download. They keep posting the ridiculous "send us your device id and we'll manually add you" response in the Missing Contributions thread. This has been an issue for months also. This shouldn't be that difficult to fix. It makes no sense to announce a full restart and ask for more contributors while the missing statistics issue still exists. This is a prime example they don't understand what it takes to run a distributing computing project. The most important thing to the contributors is having work available and getting credit for completing it. They obviously don't understand this basic fact and have no ability to change their behavior. They are wasting money. They should just shut WCG down and say the show's over, it's time for everyone to go home. I'm totally surprised the non-Krembil researchers are putting up with this foolishness. I'm totally surprised the non-Krembil researchers are putting up with this foolishness. They may be staying because they do not have any other cost effective alternative. Lack of resources is endemic in the research community. I agree with much of your frustration. Perhaps Krembil should look at turn the taps down a bit on both ARP and OPNG until they find a state of operations which is stable. Once again, a lack of information from them acknowledging the hiccups is glaring. Cheers Edit: from a post on May 5: SCC1 We observed a problem in the distributions of SCC1 work units but it has since been solved and they should be flowing normally. They must have a different definition of normally that I have. ![]() Cheers

Both up and download are not working. Agreed! I have a stack of stuck uploads. No stuck downloads currently, just nothing new in the past three hours or more while I would have expected a trickle in. |
