Re: World Community Grid complete restart

I have set a 2-day queue in my profile because that is how long it takes Krembil to fix problems, such as the latest issue. My job is to keep my crunchers crunching. This is not "hoarding". Despite that I found some had run dry this weekend and I had to manually intervene, and constantly press retry for an hour until the upload queue was cleared. That suggests that a 2-day queue is not large enough. The problem is that someone on the other end is not doing their job. The sad truth is I have fired data center staff and programmers for non-performance that were doing a better job than Krembil is doing now.

Cheers coffee

Sorry, but what you and other don't realize is that you are totally skewing any troubleshoot efforts that (hopefully) happen on WCGs side. There are posts in here where people happily proclaim that they don't get any errors just because they are keeping a +5 day cache, making any file transfer problems look less bad than they actually are, because THEY don't complain, in fact they laugh at everyone else.
That is then exaggerated with those that are equally proud of using automatic means to do the retries for them, which specially in the recent cases of upload errors, where files are transferred to more than +100% before crapping out. Those adding to the actual source of the problem of inadequate bandwidth or server resources.

Yes, you (and those others) are just being selfish, trying to fill your need while it would be the job of WCG to fix the issues and make things working (more) smoothly for everyone....

And Krembil is according to Dr.Jurisica, despite having their name plastered all over the place, not involved with or supporting WCG, and yes, a lot of the problems are not really related to any money costing problems, like the recent hardware issues but are downright self-inflicted like the announcement, like in this thread, of a "complete restart", giving the impression of everything being peachy fine (which it isn't by a long shot), while as a fact the whole system for the 11 months since the first has still to run without issues for more than 2 weeks continuously. Not to mention solving all the issues that have crept up during that time, like the missing stats from June 2022 through Sep 28th 2022, the "missing devices" that is going on for more than half a year now or not being able to fix their support email issues for at least two months...

Re: World Community Grid complete restart

Well, the upload errors that plagued us all weekend seem all to be of a new variant. While the last one had a lot of WUs crap out when then ran well (50-60%) beyond the indicated filesize, the latest round all might run to 100%, then pause for a couple of seconds before getting stuffed with a 107 byte error message and need to be retried. Over and over again... crying

No Ralf, I am not being selfish, I am doing my job, which is to keep my crunchers crunching. By maintaining a cache, I am not consuming WUs any faster than if I was not. It is simply a reserve to keep going through the constant weekend outages.

I am not "laughing" at any of the volunteers. You won't find any posts of the sort from me.

Re: World Community Grid complete restart

Well, I'm throwing my Current Streak of 1 year+ out the window, and will stop crunching WCG work, until WCG is really back. I have 4 MCM1 tasks left to crunch, and I will finish those.

The announcement that they are back, was way too early, since we all know by now, that they are certainly not back to anything that can be called "normal". Since I'm not interested in any other projects, this means that all my computers will be turned off, and I will save a lot on my electricity bills.

I'll keep an eye on the forum, and the status of WCG, and will return when I decide that it's worth it. I believe that will take several months.

Until then, I wish you all a fine summer, in the northern hemisphere, and a fine winter in the southern hemisphere.

@Grumpy Swede

Enjoy your break, you will be missed. Others will process the work that your machines are not processing

Well, the worst is that if you point the obvious out to the folks at WCG, at least those that sometimes follow the forum, you even get censored... sad

Thanks Grumpy, have nice Midsommar next month and hope to still see you around next year...

take care,

Ralf

Re: World Community Grid complete restart

We restarted already (although if we did and which restart may be subject to some debate). Why do we still have posts in this section?

There are support issues all over the general forum. It gets a little tiring digging through them trying to find out what's going on. Everything seems to be reactive, no proactive moves.
