Re: 2023-10-27 Update (Weekend work unit availability)

I just found out that BOINC on one of my computers started complaining (4 hours ago):

02-Nov-2023 12:55:29 [World Community Grid] Requesting new tasks for NVIDIA GPU
02-Nov-2023 12:55:30 [---] Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
02-Nov-2023 12:55:30 [World Community Grid] Scheduler request failed: Stream error in the HTTP/2 framing layer
02-Nov-2023 12:55:32 [---] Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

and then
02-Nov-2023 13:00:44 [World Community Grid] Scheduler request failed: Error 408
ceaselessly, ad nauseam ...
02-Nov-2023 16:51:45 [World Community Grid] Scheduler request failed: Error 408

Since my other computers are running fine and the network on the problematic computer seemed OK, I tried to find out what was wrong. I found this post in the BOINC forum. I restarted the client and it worked immediately:
Thu 02 Nov 2023 16:52:25 | World Community Grid | Reporting 66 completed tasks
Thu 02 Nov 2023 16:52:25 | World Community Grid | Requesting new tasks for CPU and NVIDIA GPU
Thu 02 Nov 2023 16:52:30 | World Community Grid | Scheduler request completed: got 41 new tasks

Thu 02 Nov 2023 16:57:01 | World Community Grid | Requesting new tasks for CPU and NVIDIA GPU
Thu 02 Nov 2023 16:57:05 | World Community Grid | Scheduler request completed: got 111 new tasks

Re: 2023-10-27 Update (Weekend work unit availability)

That makes it all the weirder, Sgt. Joe. My internet connection isn't dropping out; I'll get messages about "no work available" sometimes only to get WUs minutes later, but having to keep doing manual retries for my paltry 20-25 units (I tweaked it recently, but meh). Having been with WCG before the Great Migration it's obvious something is amiss, but not what that something is. I'm still managing to contribute to the research, but this cobbled-together network and storage WCG is running is just awful.

Check your preferences. I have the profile for my Windows machine set to a maximum of 10 work units for an 8 thread machine. When the queue is full (10 workunits) I will get the message " No tasks are available for Mapping Cancer Markers" which makes sense since the queue is full per the limit I have set in the profile. The reason the system is looking for more work units is the preference I have set for storing at least 2 days of work will be looking to get more work units, but is constrained by the limit set in the profile. This system has kept a rock steady queue of 10 work units for a long time, as long as the supply of MCM units is steady and available. Once another project I am interested in becomes available, I will tweak both the profile and the preferences to maintain a full queue with the least amount of intervention on my part.

Cheers

Edit: Update 02:25 UTC Nov. 10. It appears that "rock steady" has gone the way of the dodo bird. Without any more work units, all of my systems will be dry soon. 3 out of 4 are dry now. The last one will be dry in about an hour. Unfortunately my backup project DENIS@Home is also out of work. Once the machines are out of work, I shut all but one down and then wait.
Cheers

Re: 2023-10-27 Update (Weekend work unit availability)

With nothing better to do, I executed the restart that was necessary after some updates, and got 103 new tasks. Given it runs 88 at a time, that isn't too much, but still. Something is moving. On friday!

That's weird. I'm getting plenty of new WUs.

Re: 2023-10-27 Update (Weekend work unit availability)

It would seem that there is a shortage of units allocated to Windows machines.
