Sgt. Joe,
I've been tracking your odd task as well :-) and I'm now firmly of the view that unless they do something like marking the stuck initial task as "Don't need" (or removing the entire workunit) it'll remain stuck, possibly for a very long time; it's had more than long enough for normal failsafe mechanisms to have dealt with it! If it isn't just "lost" because the WU ID and/or result ID is far lower than anything current, rendering it "invisible" (which shouldn't happen, but...), the only way to find out why it's stuck is to have [read only] access to the BOINC result and workunit tables, and even that might not show up an obvious reason :-( -- needless to say, end users don't have that level of access :-) Cheers - Al. P.S. I still wonder if it's something to do with the initial misrepresentation of that ARM host as "Android" (in which case WCG might need to refine their host classification for ARM architecture for MCM1 :-) |

Al,
----------------------------------------Thanks for tracking. I am guessing the techs have better things to do than track down one "lost" task. This could just be a "one off" or it could possibly be a symptom of some deep buried quirk in the feeding (?) software. I will keep a periodic eye on it and see if it eventually gets resolved. Cheers
Sgt. Joe

Sgt.Joe, wow, that is an incredibly aged task to be still 'waiting to be sent'!
----------------------------------------It's especially odd that it's the _1 of the original two quorom wus that is still waiting to be sent. Your completed task is the _2 resend of the errored _0. So the resend got sent even when one of the originals was still waiting....?! bizarre. ![]() |

Unfortunately, Sgt Joe is not the only one seeing "waiting to be sent" WU's. Here is an unedited selection of copy/paste from my oldest:

I usually have about 150 to 200 tasks awaiting validation and I see the number has now gradually grown to about 450. I am curious to see if this continues or once again stabilizes. I am not that good at reading the tea leaves yet at this point.

I am not that good at reading the tea leaves yet at this point. I am currently at 596 in PVa jail, with the oldest one returned on 6/16, so 8 days ago, which is a bit more than the usual 5 that were showing since the huge backlog valid WUs to be purged had been solved a few months ago. And this is an about 20% increase of what showed on 6/15, the last time I checked...Cheers The oldest ones, at least the few that I quickly looked at before leaving the house, are all showing the "waiting to be send" and are all _2 or _3 resends where one or more wingman shows either "no reply" or some kind of "error"... From my relatively small sample (about 400 MCM1 tasks a day at present) I have observed the following:
----------------------------------------
I hope Ralf's definition of PVal jail is any task waiting for validation, rather than tasks where two [or more] wingmen are waiting for validation :-) -- as far as I can tell, validations that don't need retries still seem to be happening at normal rates, so I'd be seriously worried if he's seeing something very different... That said, I do have two tasks in my sort of PVal jail, rather than a holding cell :-) -- in both cases, the wingman returned round about the time WCG seemed to recover from that period of unavailability on the 19th and 20th, so I suspect the validator [or transitioner?] missed a step and they'll be stuck until the transitioner hits its "why hasn't something happened here" limit in a day or two... Might there be a policy of not sending out replacements to give crunchers more time to return units after the deadlines? That way less crunching time is wasted.
However some of mine in PVal jail have a wingman errored - those should not be held. The resends seem to go out in batches, which may be more efficient. Mike |
