Re: The Extremes thread

Looking at the figures from generations.txt there only seem to be about 100 extremes actually moving. Generations 126 - 128 would seem to hold many stuck units

I've been wondering about the distribution of stuck units, and the reasons...

I suspect some have been stalled for so long that their last category was Normal at the time they failed :-)

And there's a fair chance that many of them failed because of non-computational issues such as upload/download errors during the various system crises we have had. I would assume there is some process for ensuring that tasks that fail for those reasons get resubmitted in a timely fashion without too much operator intervention (but we know what they say about ass-u-me...)

Cheers - Al.

Re: The Extremes thread

Al

That could be part of the problem. However state.txt does not add up to 35609!

There are 53 extra "normals", 419 fewer "accelerated" and 82 fewer "extremes".

Also, extremes of weather tend to be seasonal and different parts of Africa would have them at different times of the year. And each generation corresponds to a specific date.

I have assumed that the problem lies with extremes of weather that the programming has been unable to cope with possibly caused by difficult terrain.

Reducing the TimeStep has helped to progress some units probably by narrowing the differences in weather between steps.

But without any confirmation, we can only guess!

wink

Re: The Extremes thread

Here's another sighting of a validated workunit in the Extreme category with 5 or less workunits in its current generation (or in both its adjacent generations).

(Output generated by ”wcgstats -frrr= 666028653”)
workunit 666028653
ARP1_0032724_123_0 Linux Debian Valid 2025-02-15T10:47:10 2025-02-15T20:20:53 8.93/8.94 533.2/538.2
ARP1_0032724_123_1 Linux Debian InPrg 2025-02-15T10:47:14 2025-02-16T22:47:14 0.00/0.00 0.0/0.0
ARP1_0032724_123_2 Fedora Linux Valid 2025-02-15T10:47:17 2025-02-16T03:20:02 16.07/16.40 543.2/538.2

This grid cell was previously sighted in post 701458 by gb009761, advancing 8 generations in ±9 days, depending on your POV.

Re: The Extremes thread

The generations with suspect stuck extremes have advanced to 122.

I also suspect that most of the other extremes are stuck, having stuck when their generation still classified as accelerated.

There are 849 listed in generations up to 136 (Extremes & Accelerated) in generations.txt, but only 350 in state.txt. This reduces the pool of available
work units.

Re: The Extremes thread

There are 336 units listed as extreme but only 12 advanced in the last 24 hours and 2 of them escaped to accelerated. Most of the rest are presumed stuck.

Re: The Extremes thread

After today's stats, there appear to be 3 extremes active and 329 stuck.

Re: The Extremes thread

Looking back a couple of weeks, it would seem as though there may be the following units movable in extreme generation:

126 - 4
127 - 5
128 - 0
129 - 1
130 - 1
131 - 0

That would be a total of 11.. I previously thought it was only 3 but the other 8 would seem to have been moving slowly.

There are 330 units in the extreme generations so 319 must be stuck.
