Graham another way around your pending validations is to change your WU gathering to collect a couple of days worth of work units and then by the time you get round to crunching yours most others are waiting on you instead of the other way around. This works unless everyone follows suit so keep it to yourself ![]() Dave Dave, I can see how this means you would get your points validated quicker when you return the WU but do you actually get the results any quicker overall? In effect, is this strategy going to have a big impact on someones results (if they had 2 or 3 machines going 24hr per day). Paul |

many causes and effects.
----------------------------------------Graham concern appears to be that a whole load of work that you have already done hasn't been credited there and then on the spot as it does in UD. My suggestion is a personal strategy to minimise this effect. If everyone does the same then we'll all return our results 2 days later. The long and short of it is a bit of patience is required by all parties in the number crunching game and we all get our alloted points in the end. I once posted a post in the chat thread as a bit of tongue in cheek humour about a work unit that took over a week to credit. Knreed is just trying to improve the overall efficiency of the grid. By only sending out 3 copies instead of the usual 5 this supercomputer we run together goes from around 30TFlops to about 50TFlops of real work being done with no extra investment and that, given the environmental concerns, can only be a good thing. You can have Jam today or Jam tomorrow The trend is upwards and onwards ![]() Dave ![]() |

![]() Has anyone experienced a slowdown in Pending Validations I have 23 waiting for validation and I usually have between 10 and 12 by the 12:00am GMT update Hi Graham, Well I don't have 23 waiting for validation, but as of today I have 6 pending. I also have 1 more that will be done within the next 2 hours or less to be added to that list of pending files. |

Morning Windflowers To make sure the results of our crunching are absolutely reliable and accurate a work unit is sent out to a number of users to crunch. A result is deemed valid once at least 3 PC's arrive at the same answer after all their hard work. This has always been the case as this is medical science the accuracy of the results is a tad important. Previously on BOINC 4 work units were sent out initially running on 4 computers but only 3 are needed for the so called quorum. So one PC was effectively wasting it's time, but not really, because a WU might get allocated to someone who crunches once a blue moon and so they never return a result. We now have plenty of work queuing up to use the WCG resource and so knreed is trialling a lean and mean alternative of only sending work units out to 3 pc's initially (instead of 4) and only sending out a 4th WU if there isn't a suitably quick response from the first 3. The conditions out there for a work unit are still the same so it is more likely that 2 out of the 3 WU will be returned and you are waiting for the 3rd (previously you would have had 2 chances to get the third result - now only one) so the upshot of all of this is that you are likely to have more pending validations than before but the big plus is we get more effective use of the 50,000+ PC's crunching out there for the full 24 each day. Hope this is clear ![]() Dave Hi Dave, Thanks for your detailed explanation. I think the new policy is good and it is worthwhile for utilizing the crunching power more efficently even though the time taken for validation will be longer. ![]() |
