Yes, it was wind. It happened about 03:00 in the morning. It had been hailing and that woke me, so I was shutting windows, etc. I happened to be watching out my front door when it happened so I saw it go. It was about half rotten in the bottom which I determined when I grubbed the stump out.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Everyone recovering from the storms ok? Last few days have been very pleasant.

So I just bought a new laptop, a Sony Vaio 14".

I wanted something powerful but easy to travel with, so I got one with the i7-3632qm processor. Its quite capable with 4c/8t ivy bridge power and only burns 35 watts...a very efficient crunching beast.

So far I've had no issues crunching with it other than the noisy fan which can be expected when maxing out a laptop cpu. Just wanted to let anyone know who might be interested in a crunching laptop.

Just curious - what is the ballpark figure on price on one of those ?

Saved a few hundred $ buying manufacturer refurbished for $650. It looks new to me though. Not the cheapest but its also got windows 8, 8gb memory and touchscreen, and discrete AMD radeon 7670 graphics.

That sounds like a good machine at a good price. What are you crunching with the GPU?

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Not using the gpu at the moment. Worried that it might throttle the CPU down to keep thermal in check, or get too hot if I do both cpu and gpu at the same time.

If there is another GPU project on WCG I might switch to using that in the future.

I was able to throttle back the GPU in the Control Panel, battery settings. That brought my CPU temp down by 7°C. I can still crunch with all 4 cores and GPU without heat issues.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Good to know...I'll give it a try. What project are you using the GPU for?

I can use a 6370M for Collatz, so I'm sure you could too. With the setting for "high performance" it takes ~7 hours to crunch a regular Collatz WU. On the setting for "battery life" it takes 17 for the same unit. But the CPU temp is way lower so I use that setting in the summer to keep the same temp I have in the winter.
