Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I got my intel i3 back up in limp mode. No graphics cards, just a hard drive. Its currently crunching so my contribution should inch-up.

Congratulations. Let us know how it runs.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Its been running for about 48 hours now. But no Intel GPU tasks yet. Is anyone getting GPU tasks anymore?

If I remember correctly, Intel GPU tasks were supposedly pretty scarce.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I got my utility bill a couple of days ago. I could see the price of gas for heating had gone up a bit to say the least so a reckoning was had about how to cut down the size of the bill. Since I do need to heat the house and it is getting a wee bit colder now, the decision was made that if the gas is going to cost more, then the electrical use will need to take a hit. Therefore I have reluctantly changed the status on two of my systems to "No more tasks" and when they run out the queue, I will shut them down until springtime. These would be the two least efficient systems (24 thread Xeon X5670 and Xeon X5645) and then I will see how much of difference in the bill that makes. I may have to do one more after that but we'll see. Otherwise, I'll just keep plugging along.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Got to do what you got to do Joe. Thanks to the Democrats, everything but my paycheck is going up. Am holding off on any new builds until I can build a Arm system. That’s provided WCG releases WU’s that crunch the nativity. Still can’t find any arm chips though. I have a Mac mini with the M1 chip but won’t even try crunching with it until WU’s are native. Seems everything is moving to arm. More power efficient. For now, my hex AMD system is my only cruncher. Did see prices drop on AMD 16 core for under $600. Temping but passing.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Pretty happy with the performance of the 16c/32t AMD crunchers they are fast and reliable, other than when Windows decides to commandeer the system to do its own updates. Have the CPU's downclocked around 3.8 ghz and they run fast, cool, and quiet. Happy sticking with native x86, never been big on Apple or Arm. With the chip shortages, I will probably not be upgrading again anytime soon. I'm always a whore for efficiency though so if we start seeing 5nm or 3nm chips coming out it might be compelling to upgrade. Probably not if it requires a motherboard upgrade though. Meanwhile the GPU's are doing most of the work if/when they get fed. Crazy how quickly they chew through the work when they get it.

Sgt. Joe it'd be nice if you could move the crunchers inside the house to contribute to the heating so it would be a win/win, but I bet those servers are too noisy for it. Ah well, gotta do what you gotta do.

Good day

They could certainly provide quite a bit of heat, but unfortunately the wiring in my house is not really conducive to adding that kind of load. I would have to put each one on a separate circuit and kind of distribute them around the house, which would work nice for heat distribution. However, as soon as the vacuum would start or my wife would use the hair dryer, a fuse would blow. I have installed the circuit breakers which screw into the fuse bases, but that is only a measure to make easier to reset the circuit. The real solution would be to get part of the house re-wired with more modern wiring and with a circuit which would handle all of the systems. They are really not too noisy once they settle into their regular running, but the fans are always turning. The only time they really make noise is on start up, when they sound like an airplane taking off for couple of minutes. Hence they reside in an out building. The real issue now is the cost of running them. Once it warms in the spring I will restart them. Just like you I am always looking for a deal on more efficient systems at a reasonable price. More bang for the buck so to speak.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

It looks like winter is upon us this morning. We have about an inch (2.54cm) of snow this morning. The temperature is still quite balmy at 33F(0.5C). We will see a gradual cool off in a few days.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

The endless rain in Seattle is upon us for the past month or two. At least no snow!

On a separate note, I’m trying to put together another system. Newegg is dreadful on small items with their free shipping. I have a SSD drive I have been trying to get since Nov 1. The first one was last in shipping, the replacement appears to be lost as well. Larger items come quickly, but the cheap items are a pain and I am considering alternative vendors for this gear.
