You aren't running BOINC as a service, so you need to exit BOINC manually (using File->Exit) before shutting down your computer.
The FAQ that Sekerob pointed you to has a couple of typos, so if you did exactly what it says, it will fail (even if you did have a service installation). It should say this: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 |

I bet the number of times we've pointed people to that one a few of those will have flopped, lest they went straight into the register and drilled to it directly.... think a few actually did from the feedback. Added: Can't wait for that and have incorporated correct instructions in our own FAQ.

Ok I have changed the text so it matches the new one.
So is there anyway I can get it to run as a service? I will never remember to shut the program down manually, which will mean that my crunching will be of no use. |

You wont need to if the 60 second setting takes ahold.
----------------------------------------And you're in luck, as the next big release 6.0 will *only* install as service, so is the plan.

Sekerob, read the FAQ again - this registry setting only affects services. I haven't tested it, but I'm assuming it has absolutely no effect on normal processes.
K-J, to change to a service installation, you have to remove BOINC then reinstall it. If you install to the same folder as before, you won't lose any work in progress. |

Just spotted this,
"There's absolutely no point in the delay factor of 60 seconds if you do not use the operating system's shutdown procedure." What is that procedure? The manual shutdown? |

I am getting more and more confused now. Do I need to reinstall Boinc to be able to just switch it off without loosing any data after the 60 sec delay change? How do you make the series instalation? I have no memory of this being an option when installing boinc. Sorry for all the questions but I really want to get this to work. |

"- If you run as a service install, you need to stop the service first. Start->Run, type net stop boinc and hit enter. which is followed by *or* and the registry instruction well it was written by a none native english person i think, so maybe i have an advantage. To me it looks like "how to continue doing it manual, or" Don't you love the written word and the interpretation ![]()

to change to a service installation, you have to remove BOINC then reinstall it. Didactylos,When I upgraded from 5.8.16 to beta 5.10.7 I also switched to "service installation" and I am pretty sure that I have not uninstalled anything myself. The only problem was because I had no password on my user name, so I quit the installation, set a password, started the installation again and everything went fine. Cheers. Jean. |

JmBoullier, correct. But only because an upgrade automatically removes the previous installation for you. If you try this with the same version, it won't work. It will say it's already installed, and give you the option to remove or repair the installation.
K-J: Here's a step by step guide for you. 1) Uninstall BOINC. Do this by going to Add/Remove programs in Control Panel. 2) Reinstall BOINC. When you get to the part that asks you what installation type you want, select Service (not Single or Shared). Make sure you install to the same folder as before: D:\bionic\ I think you said. 3) Make sure you have the correct registry key in there. Open regedit (Start->Run type "regedit") and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control and check that the WaitToKillServiceTimeout value is set to 60000. 4) Reboot so that the changes take effect. |
