Differing versions of boinc

I have been having issues with BOINC where it would not connect to world community grid after running just fine for a few weeks. I would have to uninstall it, delete the BOINC directory, reboot, and install it again to get it to work. Why? Vista.

I have noticed a few things.
ONE: On the BOINC website, version 5.10.20 is listed as the latest stable release.
TWO: I have never been able to get my graphics to look like the screenshots on here. The fightAIDS@home skin is never installed on my system.

I reverted to the older version assuming that would solve my connectivity problems. (We'll see.) When I first bought my new system, I installed BOINC and had no compatibility issues with it. It ran just fine up until vista barfed and needed reinstalled. I am thinking it is the newer version of the software.

So my questions are:
What is different about the newer 5.10.22 release hosted by worldcommunitygrid?
How can I install the fightAIDS@home and worldcommunitygrid skins into BOINC?

Unfortunately, I only have the ugly default skin right now.

Re: Differing versions of boinc

EDIT: Sorry, I found SOMETHING about the versions differences, but I still am not getting enough info about the differences between 20 and 22. Does anyone have the changelog?

Also, I'd still like info on skins.

I swear I didn't mean to break the number one forum rule (Don't post a question without looking for an existing answer first) but I looked before and somehow missed it. Either way, I would like more detailed info.

Re: Differing versions of boinc

I don't know what you are looking for.

Since I see the word "Vista", I will refer you first to the FAQ section with the Vista article. There are several recurring hints to get things going. First Vista, THEN BOINC.

5.10.20 is the last stable release in BOINC, but it hasn't yet been certified here. We're close, and it may work or may not work. I have been running 5.10.7, over and above the stable 5.8+, and have not had any problems in WinXP.

Re: Differing versions of boinc

What about the skins? And I looked at the vista article and it only showed fixes for problems with getting BOINC running, not keeping it that way or diagnosing issues.

I interpreted that as "getting it running".

First, install BOINC in its own directory instead of the default program path on Vista. Did you do that?

Re: Differing versions of boinc

Bookmark the below thread at Berkeley for staying informed of changes: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=1668

The 5.10.22 is the version packaged by WCG and WCG-Skinned to also make use of the extra functionality to identify the old WCG (UD) agent and optionally remove that. Each WCG project, including FA@H come with their own set of slides you can see rotating in the BOINC Simple View window.

Between 5.10.20 and 5.10.21 there are lots of bug fixes and a few more with the one WCG released, some not yet documented. As always WCG recommends their checked and endorsed version, link provided on the WCG download page.... anything else and it gives support headaches.

Vista.... The FAQ retsof refers to: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=12856 (think you found it already, but posting it may help others readers along).

The recommended place to install with least issues is *outside* the x:\Program Files\ structure. Mainly permissions and exemptions *barfing* is prevented with this.

Somewhere there is a German website that collects skins.... use at own peril as some i know break parts of the Simple View.

Re: Differing versions of boinc

hmmm. Now WCG is ahead of Berkeley, which is still at production 5.10.20. I wonder whether Berkeley will go to this one.

I posted the FAQ link in a previous message, but not mine in this thread. Got'ta get folks used to looking around a bit. Vista can always bite you later when you think it's working now.

I've tried to find all the changes that Kevin put in and gave a comment on.
See the latest addition. I'll ask Rom and Kevin if there's more and then add it.

Re: Differing versions of boinc

Now that I reinstalled the WCG version of BOINC in C:\WCG\BOINC instead of the program files directory, vista blocks it from running at boot. it hasn't done that until now.

A wonderful thing to see after "Superfetch has stopped responding." GOD I wish I had saved up for the mac!

Re: Differing versions of boinc

from the FAQ again:
BOINC will start at the end of the install but if you logout/reboot and then try to restart BOINC, you won't be able to start it because the administrator owns it.
GOD says, keep reading.
