Hi all...
I'm back with more questions / observations ... however you like it ![]() So it occurred to me the other day (and it's rare when anything occurs to me) there might be a problem with the way the badges are awarded. The problem is in how days are counted. If you have a single core; 1 day = 1 WCG day if you have a dual core ; 1 day = 2 WCG days If you have a QUAD Core; 1 day = 4 WCG days. The other day; someone showed a 24 way system so should someone have one of those; then 1 day = 24 WCG days. Now points are points are points are points... no arguments there. However; for those who were around long before dual / quad core cpus and the such...... 90 days = 90 days; and the documentation in WCG's pages specify the number of DAYS not the number of procesor DAY Equivalents. So I think something needs to be done; I think a reasonable person would think that all "DAY" calculations be based on a single core equivalent. So a quad core does not get 4 days for every day of participation. As for points; points are points are points are points... and points for multi-core cpus' as it stands are just fine. But days for badges seems to be off a bit.... I'm sure someone here has a thought on this... we should have a good healthy discussion on the topic just to see what we come up with as a COMMUNITY!!! (What a novel idea)!! |

It does mean CPU days. All runtime is measured that way.
Don't think about it that way. Think about it this way: next time you upgrade your computer, you will be buying a dual core, or maybe an 8 or 16 core CPU. It all averages out over time. |

I have seen a couple of posts regarding the *badge* situation ... change it, don't change it, use precious stones, periodic table of elements (I kinda liked that one). I do think something could be done for higher levels ... but I understand that an implemetation along exponential manner might be very difficult for more than a few to achieve. How about after you get bronze, silver, gold ... you start working on a lifetime achievement award. Perhaps a diamond ring and for each *X* period of time (perhaps a year) you get another diamond set in your ring? So we would have ... bronze no ring, silver no ring, gold no ring, gold empty ring, gold w/ 1 diamopnd in ring etc up until 5 diamonds. Then you get an outline of a square diamond background (semi transparent so you original gold still shows through) and your diamond count starts all over again, then after another five diamond change the shape of the diamond. By adding two more variables (diamond count and diamond shape ... no I don't think diamond color would display well enough to be discernable on a PC (maybe if you add a loupe tool to the web site ... just kidding) each *level* above the original gold could be for 1 year. I have not checked the stats to see how far we would need to go but at the point that the shapes and diamond counts run out there is simply the number of years superimposed (again with a bit of transparency) over the base project badge.

I have to say.... World Community Grid can't possibly implement all the wonderful suggestions that are made for rewarding effort or recognising progress. But that's no reason why we can't have them anyway, if someone just goes to the trouble of creating them.
For example, my team has these rather nifty certificates: ![]() ![]() ![]() |
