Funny part is, One machine still runs on 5.8.5, the one that had all the extras they took out again - supposedly not ready for release - and it runs and runs and I hit all the buttons i please and it trickles work and trickles work and shares with CPDN, which job is due somewhere in 2008 and is hibernated every night and just happily smashes numbers like there is no end. U've guessed that one is going to remain put until I'm in the mood (probably when the C2D start behaving proper with a later version with tweaks like the buffer multiplier and asking for 40,000 second of work and not 4 million (WCG only 100%).

Okay keithhenry this one for you on 5.8.15:
----------------------------------------General_prefs_override.xml <global_preferences> cc_config.xml <cc_config> The 2 bolded lines started a regular trickle of work... 1 in 1 out 1 in. The DCF is 1.129 presently, all by itself and the equivalent of 1.5 day for dual core is in the queue. ![]()

Thanks Sek but in a month's time, we've gone from 5.8.8 to 5.8.15 and there're still problems - hanging uploads is the latest I believe. It's getting closer to stablizing I think but I'll wait a bit more first.

I see that 5.8.11 is out. I'd expect to see quite a few point releases for a while so I'm going back and staying on nice, stable 5.4.11 until the "Martian dust storm" (the kind that can engulf the entire planet) settles down. Not good enough...I am running 5.8.11 on one machine which shows this behavio(u)r. The queue winds down to nothing before fetching more work. There is a gap in crunching until the first new workunit gets downloaded. Like you, I will leave a couple of other machines on 5.4.11 that maintain nice, full queues. UPDATE: Maybe 5.8.15 is out, but 5.8.* doesn't seem to manage the queue well. It runs all jobs before demanding more. If you are not online at that moment, too bad. It must also wait for the first job to download before resuming crunching. I thought BOINC got away from that UD.EXE version behavio(u)r. UPDATE: I have resumed processing with 5.4.11 on all machines, and it immediately filled up the queue to completeness with 10 new downloads. UPDATE WORTH GETTING: Skip 5.8.8 and 5.8.11. 5.8.15 fixed the queue problem for Windows. I don't know about Linux.

Along with the hanging uploads, another problem from the Known Problems forum: Maximum disk usage exceeded on BOINC

Does not say anything about HPF2, but if in doubt, follow the advise.
----------------------------------------Never been a fan of the BOINC throttle and after testing BES which can only 'watch' 1 and has to be manually set for a max of 3 for any new starting job, reverted to good old trusted Threadmaster for very refined pedal control.... it's only needs a tweak when a job version changes. Visit an updated work buffer page at the uBW for a table showing the adverse effect of overextending the 'connect .....' I'm now 5.8.16 (Linux 5.8.17 is out) and the job trickle continues to be very sweet and stepping up is all of 30 seconds crunch interruption. 2 days and a WRF of 0.5 gives on my C2D on average 1.75 days (CPU days) equivalent.

Well....5.8.15 is going down to the last workunit on all machines before refilling the queue. It's still worse than 5.4.11, which worked well.
----------------------------------------The last workunit was running last evening. I was hoping to stop new workunits last evening for a short trip out of town, but I had to leave it connected to get some new ones during the night. There's about 30 in there this morning. So be it. 5.8.11 was a little worse on the old Win98 machine, and 5.8.15 is a lot worse. When it finishes a workunit, it doesn't move on to another one. it freezes the whole machine. I have to ctl-alt-delete to clear BOINC and BOINC mgr out, dial-up, and then restart BOINC. It will then do the upload. I have changed the profile to leave the work in memory. I'll see whether that changes anything. It would probably work better if I leave the machine connected all of the time, but I can't do that. 2 WinXP machines are on the same phone line and I need to connect those once in awhile also.

well, i know what I've done to get it working properly for 5.8.15 and 5.8.16... Anyway, to make u jealous, here a 5.8.15 queue. The ISP was down overnight so had a batch of 8 (red circle) and 6 (blue circle) after which trickle resumed (green circle):

2 on 1 phone connection... use one for the dial up and set up internet sharing feature. Internet Connection Sharing made its debut in Windows 98 Second Edition, and has been built-in to every successive OS: Windows Me, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. It allows two or more networked computers to share a single Internet connection, whether it is DSL, ISDN, Cable, T1, satellite, or dial-up. The problem is that the Internet Connection Sharing Wizards that come with Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows Me don't work very well, and in some cases, can break your existing Internet Connection. The good news is that it's not that hard to set up, as long as you do it properly. Actually, there's 4 computers on this phone line: 2 WinXP - qualifies for ICS 1 Win98 1st edition - not qualified 1 Dos6.2/Win3.11 - not qualified
