V - the guy you mentioned has a lot more qualifications than I'm ever likely to. From people I've met and spoken too, apparently it's not that uncommon to get people in IT who initially started in another profession. Musicians I think are the most common converts, but I've know several lawyers too.
----------------------------------------We had a nice jump in our stats today Total Run Time (y:d:h:m:s) (Rank) 19:140:05:25:27 (#423) up from 424 Points Generated (Rank) 6,920,150 (#344) up from 345 Results Returned (Rank) 24,649 (#341) UP FROM 344 Also, I've checked out recent stats for our immediate competition in points and results and it looks like we should continue to make decent progress as long as we keep crunching. ![]() ![]() |

It was a slow day for me but I have 27 WUs pending validation and 7 processors going 24/7.

I've had some intermittent problems too. I have 6 machines with 3 running UD and 3 running boinc. For some reason my machines have been getting a lot of connection errors. That's not such a problem for the boinc machines because of the cache, but the ud machines i have to watch like a hawk. However since these machines tend to be much slower, i don't check them more than about once a day - which means I'm losing time. I've also been having some security problems - mainly with network magic. Also, I seem to get attacked on a regular basis. On one machine, over about a 4 month period, zone alarm reports around 12,000 attempted intrusions.
----------------------------------------Speaking of hawks, I saw a young hawk or falcon in my back yard a couple days ago. It looked like it had just caught a squirrel and had carried to a pile of logs to dine. It was at the far end of yard and I couldn't get a good look - even with 8x binoculars, but it had long slender legs and didn't look filled out so my guess is that it was a juvenile. That's great news for us. They're such beautiful birds and we see them so rarely. The only other sighting was earlier in the summer when I saw one swoop down to grab a squirrel near the tool shed. It missed and flew away. The raptors should have easy pickings for the foreseeable future. There are so many squirrels you can't spit without hitting one. And without any natural predators, they've gotten so cocky. I do worry about the ground hogs though. We have a family that's taken up residence and while the adults are too big for most raptors, the babies would be a tasty meal. But by this time of year they too have grown considerably. Also, they never got as confident as the squirrels, although one did chew up a tent I had set up for temporary storage. However I think that was during mating season so I guess I have to cut them some slack. The tent is gone now and as soon as the weather gets a little cooler I'll put up another shed. On the days when it hasn't been brutally hot and humid it's been pouring rain. It's a miracle my basement only flooded once so far and I think that was only because I had forgotten to put in the roof gutter extension leads. If the rain water empties out near the foundation, I guess the ground is porous enough to let it seep in quickly and start infiltrating. The footings are solid cement, but the walls are cider block and mortar so they're not exactly water tight. Once you get a couple feet from the foundation, the ground is solid shale, so the water just rolls along to a lower elevation. I don't know what the neighbors do. ![]() ![]() |

I'm returning to team XPC. I had trouble splitting my remote computers (three other locations) between different projects and teams. I'm taking my computers back to Seattle again. I could be back any week. I don't gather moss.

I'm sorry you're leaving, but could you elaborate a little bit. Are you moving to Seattle? What computers do have on WCG? I had assumed from some of your posts that most belong to people you've helped. Are they also in North Carolina? My apologies if you've already explained these things.

I'm returning to team XPC. Vester, have a lot of thanks for your contributions here in the team thread. ![]() For the future I wish you an enjoying (crunching) time! ![]() Ask not what the world can do for you - ask what you can do for the world. |

The BOINC project that I've been running is based in Seattle. I'm not moving from South Carolina. I have over 200,000 points on the other project and over 100,000 here.

South Carolina - mea culpa.
----------------------------------------Hope you'll consider coming back to team Mensa. You've really made a difference for our team and we appreciate it. I hope some of the other members will start posting to our team thread. Deiter - do you know if any other members log on to the forum? I'll continue to post here every couple days. It seems that there are some WCG'ers who do follow our team so I guess it's not really like I'd be talking to myself. And Vester - of course you're welcome to post here anytime you want - member or not. I've been looking at computer prices recently and Intel's 6600 quad core has come down considerably in price. Newegg has it for a little under $300. If we start falling in the stats, I'll look seriously at building a quad core machine. Since a 2.4 ghz AMD Barcelona chip won't be available until November most likely and the 6600 already runs at 2.4ghz with simple overclocking to 2.85 ghz (20%), I'd have to go with Intel on this one. I could use a faster machine for some of the tasks I perform routinely - like archiving, parity file creation, video conversion and deep-ply backgammon calculations with GNU backgammon. I recently took a big hit on Amkor - lost about a third of its value in a one-two week period. Even so, crunching comes first, so if I have to bite the bullet . . . ![]() ![]() |

(1) No, sorry, I don't know anyone else from our team being active in these forums. ![]() (2) Don't worry, twilyth! Vester doesn't stop crunching, he's only changing team - so no harm is done to our common project. To my mind running another PC is sensible only both if you can afford it and if you enjoy it. ![]() Ask not what the world can do for you - ask what you can do for the world. |
