Re: Team Mensa smile

A little bump for my team.

Come on home Mensans - Team Mensa is where you belong.

We're crankin' our way to 5,000,000 points. Let's get this puppy in gear.

Boo-yah!!!

Re: Team Mensa smile

Come on team mates - let's conjur up excitement for our team. Just throw an overhead hook up to the board now and again to let people know we exist. We're here and we're clear - join our team. We do have 29 members after all. We should be able to manager more than a few posts a month (excluding mine).

WCG has about 600,000 members. Even if just 200,000 are active that means that at least 4,000 are Mensan or Mensa compatible. But we've got 29 members - that's just sad. We've got to get people to show us some love. Maybe a lot of them have other team loyalties and I can respect that, but there also has to be a good number of lone Mensans aching for the intimate sense of community that we could give them.

Mention to people that they can determine their qualifications online at the Mensa web site. If they can pass the online test, they should do well on the written test. Also, point out that if someone knows in their heart that they're a Mensan, then they're welcome too. It's not like we're going to check their scores.

Re: Team Mensa smile

Take a look at team Mensa. You don't have to be a member, just feel like one.

Re: Team Mensa smile

Didn't renew my Mensa membership this year since I never go to the meetings.

twilyth, if you decide to join again, Mensa can accomodate your return without joing the local group you left.

There is a group called Isolated M. I believe it exists for people who might be located where there is no local group or people like me who dropped out because they just didn't want to be involved with the local group near them for whatever reason.

Had to write the American Mensa membership folks to inquire about it. Beyond that it was fast and painless.

Best wishes to the Mensa Team!

I've heard of that but never looked into it. It's good to meet someone who knows about it. If you're not comfortable responding here, feel free to email me. You can also try to IM.

How do the members communicate? Are there any gatherings? Is it organized like a regular chapter?

Thanks for the info.

Re: Team Mensa smile

Not Comfortable? Heck, my problem is that I'm usually too comfortable about opening my mouth/opinion/keyboard/etc.

If others don't mind the information being here, it could enlighten someone else who is curious but didn't know to ask. And, it will help to bump your team's thread back to the top.

I've only been a member of Isolated M for a year or so. I think it is a SIG within American Mensa but that could just be aging neurons at work. Members of Isolated M get there by being isolated (geography wise) from others or by preference (like me).

They have a monthly (actually 10 times / year) publication that I read once or twice when I first went back. Membership also gets you the normal Mensa magazine. Additional info about it is HERE. The publication has items from members - - in fact, more items from individual members than were in the publication from the chapter I was assigned to originally.

I don't recall seeing or reading about "gatherings".

They would naturally qualify for American Mensa's gatherings and members would be able to attend any other group's gatherings if they had room for "outsiders".

Keep in mind that with members all over the place, "local" gatherings would take on a whole new meaning.

If you haven't been out for too long, you should soon start receiving mail asking you to re-join. It was through one of them that I found out about Isolated M because I wrote back to the membership folks and asked if I could join but avoid being assigned to a local organization.

That was the magic question and the rest is....oh heck, you are a Mensan...

Hope that helps a bit.

Re: Team Mensa smile

A SIG - that's where I saw it. The magazine lists the sig's from time to time and once I actually went through all of them.

So there's no virtual community like a BBS, blog, website or anything like that? You communicate via the newsletter.

By not joining the local group, did you get a break in your dues. I seem to recall that part goes to the national group and part goes to the local. Was that the point? You didn't like the idea of supporting the local group?

I know that gatherings for all members would be impossible. I was thinking in terms of meetings of members in a given geographic area. You can be "isolated" without being marooned. I know some of the local SIG's have meetings just for their members - completely apart from the monthly meeting of the local group.

My group is central NJ. They're not a bad bunch just very sleepy. I think the median age is probably around 55 or 60 - at least judging by the meetings. I don't mind that per se, I mean it's not way far from my age group. But it would be nice to have more of a mix. We do get that for the annual gathering though - just not the meetings. I should add that my information is several years old so I probably should go and check things out again.

Re: Team Mensa smile

I honestly don't know if there are virtual gathering places. Wouldn't be surprised, but never had the motivation to check.

Don't recall what the dues were. I paid for something like three years and can't recall how much that was.

My desire to not be part of a local group had nothing to do with the local group. I'm not usually a joiner. And I just got too much, uh, stuff from them. Gave me tennis elbow just throwing things away. I passed a qualifying test in the mid to late 1960's and it annoyed my mother that knowing I qualified was enough for me but not for her. I joined and now she has a single word she can use when talking about me. Some day, they will send me a renewal notice and she won't be around so I'll drop again.

Okay, I'm at the gray end of that scale. Can't help you find a way to wake them. rolling eyes

That's about all I know. If you want more info, I'd suggest two resources: the National Office staff and the coordinator for Isolated M. Probably wouldn't do for me to post contact info for either in this posting so I'll send you a note.

Good luck with your pondering!
