Evening all
What a lot of youngsters you all are. After managing to wangle two years deferment I was finally called up for National Service in 1952. It's still the best holiday I ever had. All the bull at Padgate was nothing compared to the sort of communal spirit that bound a group together and this followed on when, after being selected for flying training I had to do a further, rather tougher, three months in the Isle of Man because you could only be a pilot or navigator if you were already commissioned. Then, whilst waiting at home for a posting to the UK navigation school, some kind MP raised a question in the House as to why a number of National Service men were lounging away at home at the government's expense. I was recalled to the IOM, fitted out with proper Officers uniform instead of the make do job and flown off to Canada to do my training. With the first stint on Price Edward Island and the second in Winnipeg with leave between giving me a chance to tour some of the top half of the US and then to come back First Class on a liner to the UK, you can see what I mean. I followed that with a posting to Germany where the CO was asked to try to persuade me to sign on which I politely rejected and then returned to my job which, of course, had to be kept open for me. The supposed quid pro quo for this that I had to sign of for four years of RAF reserve but by 1954 this was a waste of resources and so I never got called to do anything which I rather regretted because Companies all gave additional leave to serve Territorial duties. |

Oh! I forgot to say thanks John for the tip about the BBC iPlayer.
It wasn't just BOINC because I hadn't changed from UD when I first tried it but when I attempted a sample download it seemed to get nowhere and so I gave it up. I thought, however, that UD and supposedly BOINC used only surplus power so why does this problem arise? It doesn't with a normal download. |
