Running a bunch of old, slow, computers just for grid computing is in my opinion, not worth the resources used for the results returned. Sure, just pitch them into the landfill. Don't bother to recycle them. That takes even more energy.Let's go back to barbers instead of doctors, alchemists instead of chemists, astrology instead of astronomy, and the good old feudal system. Learn how to serf mankind. Life could be so peasant if you only wish it. Who needs computers anyway? Join the conquest! GO NORMAN! And you know that old solution - don't recycle or throw away your computers - give them to schools and poor people!
Well, my dad has been volunteering some time at a charity that refurbishes and gives away computers. They have so many stockpiled they don't know what to do with them all - and many of them are so slow and old that they aren't worth reconditioning. So perhaps it's time to break them down for raw materials. I understand there are specialist companies that do this, and most recycling centres should filter electronic devices. |

Do recycle, but make sure the place recycling is reputable.
----------------------------------------Toxic tech threatening developing world: http://news.zdnet.co.uk/itmanagement/0,1000000308,39233630,00.htm Huge numbers of exported obsolete computers and other used electronic equipment from the US and Europe are being dumped and burned near residences in empty lots, roadsides and swamps, creating serious health and environmental contamination. The report, entitled The Digital Dump: Exporting High-Tech Re-use and Abuse to Africa, also claimed that US and European manufacturers are dumping computers and other electrical goods under the guise of recycling or charity donations. ROHS should help mediate some of this, but unfortunately the US has not signed on to a similar measure. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 2, 2007 11:50:09 PM] |

Dear electrictroy
Some ideas: 1) Get a green energy supplier (i.e. energy generated from renewables). 2) Ditch your car. 3) Stop flying. 4) Turn off the aircon and open your and windows. 6) Go to bed when it gets dark. 7) Get out of bed when it gets light. 5) Don't eat any foods that require cooking. 7) Only drink cold drinks. 8) Use your PC for WCG and not for surfing. etc etc Have a nice day. |

Every PC will eventually get to point where it can't be fixed or repurposed for use by the parents, kids, etc. HP in the US has had a recycling program for a long time which will take products from all . manufactures. I have used them for my unusable systems and CRTs.
----------------------------------------The big change in recent years is the (lack of) a need to upgrade. It used to be I upgraded or replaced my system every 6 months since the computer couldn't keep up. Now we are at the point where the software (excluding games) is not utilizing all the performance in todays multicore systems. I fully expect to have my current system 5 or more years before I need to replace it. ![]() “Where an excess of power prevails, property of no sort is duly respected. Yes, I cut the machines at 500mhz now. As a system comes to retirement, I scrap the old mobo-cpu and upgrade the machines around it. leaving a shell.
----------------------------------------Soon I will see if some good mobo-cpu combo packs come available. Then ride the cheap ram train my local computer store. Then I can repopulate a shell or 2. But my front room still looks like a feakin' computer club hit it! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

But my front room still looks like a feakin' computer club hit it! I have recycled many cases as well with new MB/CPU. The problem with that is usually the power supply. The 175-250W PS that came with the P2/3s just don't cut it on newer systems. In many cases, I can get a new case with a 450/600W PS for the price of just a power supply... Most of my older systems went to the Boys & Girls Club in working condition. A fresh FDisk/format & install of the OS can make an old machine run a lot better! LOL ![]() ![]() ![]() |
