Re: I'm back! How much energy is used by the Grid Agent?

So where should we start in reducing the population? Euthanasia?

That does look a bit racist. What about youth in Europe or America or the rest of the world ?

It means killing people off when they are no longer productive members of society, it has nothing to do with race. Mercy Killing so to speak.
It could be very abritrary... anyone who has an IQ less than XX, anyone older than XX, anyone who has a certain disease or defect, etc.
I don't think it's a good idea, but if we MUST reduce the world's population, how do you want to start? Controlling the birth rate in many countries is a problem. In the West, not so much, the birth rate has been dropping for a long time.
Mother Nature will take care of the size of the population when it gets large enough.....we would be living like rats by then, though.

Re: I'm back! How much energy is used by the Grid Agent?

[ I turned on the grid agent this morning. My room was a little cold, and my PC makes for a great heater. The fan instantly went from "off" to "full speed" as soon as the WCG was activated! Definitely sucking a lot of power. ]
Bring on substantiated a verifiable numbers plz as what you state is mere suppositioning.

That was RUDE.

I'm electrical design engineer who designs computer circuitry for a living.... not an idiot to be talked down to. I don't have to do calculations to know, "Wow.... the sun really made my car hot today," when I burn my butt sitting down on the leather seats.

It's obvious it was the sun that did it.

Likewise clearly there's an increase in power consumption with WCG. The CPU was idling at 5 all night (downloading), and now it's at 55. The computer case was cool to the touch, and now it's quite warm. The fan was off; and now it's full speed (not quarter speed or half speed... FULL speed). ------------ More computation yields more circuits active, more voltages transitioning states, and therefore more current consumed. And more heat generated (which caused the fan to go from off to full speed).

It's as obvious as 2+2 == 4

.

Of course it's using more power when it's crunching. Thats a given.
The machine is doing another "job" and that job takes power(energy) to do. When you raise your backside off of a chair it takes energy.
As to your PC when you hear the cpu fan speed up, it's dealing with increased heat so it runs faster to pull that heat away from the processor.
I'm a bit confused by some of your statements.
Either you see the worth in doing the project or you don't.
If you do you run it and pay the ascoiated costs in terms of increased elec use, some added heat, etc.
If your not willing to accept those costs then don't run the project.
Simple equation to me.

Re: I'm back! How much energy is used by the Grid Agent?

WHAT EVo Said

I was at Ud for a couple of years till it went T1Ts up I have 4 machines
here just ticking over crunching as best they can .
I'm not rich nor likely to be.
How I spend my money is for me to chose I wont save the planet
nor I think will I send it crashing into eternal damnation.
I crunch because I can and I believe that it helps mankind
thats not being esoteric about things......
I could drink coffee made from acorns garnered in autumm brewed over a wood fire I could but I dont nor I doubt do any of you lot out there.
I prefer "proper Coffee " flown I expect from deepest Brazil
(Theres an awful lot of coffee in Brazil)

so folks although wcg doesnt have a Cancer Project at this time

I'm here crunching what ever is available thinking that its better
than searhing for weather solutions or alien beings.

Hi ho folks ....

Ps to above post
maybe I am biased
I work at a Hospice and have recently had an major op
for prostate cancer

Hells bells what ever it takes
stop peeeing about bothering about xwatts of energy used
Try being told youve got CANCER
Boy does thatever concentrate the mind >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> tongue

You knew me as 'electrictroy' at the grid.org forum.

So how much impact does running the Grid Agent have on the environment (and our health)? Somebody at the other forum sat down & did the calculations, and revealed it's equivalent in CO2 and other polluants to driving the average car 10,000 miles (per year).

Is it worth it?

Is it worthwhile to expend that much energy/pollution for the results obtained?

Too much cost:
