Some website feedback

I sent the www.worldcommunitygrid.org address to a collegue the other day, who is a software engineer, and into tweaking his PCs for games, overclocking, etc. Basically he's someone who understands computers!

A day or two later had he installed the software?

He hadn't.

I asked why not.... his response.... He 'doesn't have any spare PCs he could leave switched on all the time'.

His understanding was entirely from what he read on the wcg site, before he deleted my email, and moved on to something else.

An opportunity missed (well 3 actually ... the guy has 3 PCs). When pushed further what he thought of it ... 'it's just another of those projects like seti@home isn't it?'

He hadn't gotten the message that ...

--- wcg is a heck of a lot more beneficial for humanity than what SETI is
and
--- the grid is a single grid incorporating multiple projects and a constantly growing number of such projects, all automagically being incorporated with no effort from the contributor.

Any how, just thought I'd provide a bit of feedback on the website, as with such a good aim, we surely wanna grab as many contributors as we can, don't we?

Perhaps a homepage revamp might attract more contributors?

Re: Some website feedback

Let's have a look, shall we?

The first sentence is "World Community Grid's mission is to create the largest public computing grid benefiting humanity."

In the "How you can help" section (right at the top!) the first sentence is "Donate the time your computer is turned on, but is idle, to projects that benefit humanity!"

I fear your colleague simply didn't read the site. It's very common, sadly. People familiar with efforts like SETI see the word "grid" and switch off. The only way to address this is through discussion. Point out the differences, the risks and the benefits. Very few people are sold on a web page alone.

Exactly my point. He didn't read the site, but he did look at the pages. That's why I suggested it may be worth a redesign
so that the ---- KEY INFORMATION --- is....

Re: Some website feedback

Yeah.

On the whole, though, I'd prefer people to know what they're signing up for.

There's nothing to stop the full information being made available as well.... just make sure that any visitor sees at a glance what the site is about..... otherwise they won't know it's worth spending more time finding that info, and will just go elsewhere...... just like my collegue did.....

A picture tells a thousand words...., the only one item 'i' think missing is a RSS feed link, which so happens to be a current topic. My browser status bar says "Nessun Feed Rilevato in Questa Pagina". It was requested on a few occasions.

Added: This page fits in a regular 1024x768 browser display. smile

Re: Some website feedback

There are plenty of valid criticisms you could make. So far, you haven't pinpointed anything in particular.

And I think Jakob Nielsen is a total fraud, but that is just my personal opinion - formed after reading his site.

edit: I think I should expand on that, since otherwise it isn't fair to him. Many of his points are obviously correct, with research to back them up. However, his own website is awful to look at, and difficult to navigate. How can anyone take his advice seriously? His prominence lets him get away with making daft claims (such as his advice that cross browser compatibility isn't important - he's changed his tune on that one!), and his fans lap it up. For years he seems to have done nothing but regurgitate the same stuff at great length. More poor advice: his "F pattern study" where he concludes how pages should be laid out. But the results of the study are a simple result of the layout of existing pages! Like I said: he's a fraud.

Re: Some website feedback

I thought I had pointed out some valid critiscisms. Particularly that the web site doesn't promintently enough get across the message of what WCG actually is... prominently enough that a new reader gets the message before their attention is lost

Yes the infos there if you actually sit down and read the text... but you have to have decided it's worth reading. Do most web users on first visit to wcg?

My collegue didn't. It only took me a quick 2 second google to find web design recommendations that suggested that visitors don't generally read a web site in detail when they first arrive. I'm sure if I do more searches I can find more.

Anyway, just my feedback. If your happy that the website is fine, then forget I mention anything.

I would imagine that if yuou stopped the average guy or gal in the street and asked which was more important... curing cancer, aids and dengue, or alternatively finding little green men, that most would think curing cancer, aids and dengue..... so why, after 3 years has wcg only got 300,000 contributors?... last time I checked (sometime ago) SETI had around 2million.

I'll go back to lerking.

Seti@home classic started in 1999 and was the only game in town for many years. I am connected to over 50 BOINC projects myself, and very, very few of them have over 300,000 members. alien 2 alien 2 alien 2 alien 2 alien 2 alien 2
