Good Morning Base Campers!
Today we have waved goodbye to: cswchan Duke of Buckingham [TeaM] tanner2 ![]() ![]() ![]() As you have hopefully noticed in your inbox, TLD has finished the vote for Base Camp's New Years Trek. You have the coordinates, so please adjust your GPS and get ready to set out as soon as you have made the Happy New Year bubbly toast with your loved ones. Nine of you voted. A sure sign that Base Camp is a free nation, as the electoral turnout in the GDR - East Germany -in its day and North Korea to this day consistently showed/shows some 99.998% voters voting. Yesterday upstairs Yvonne and I went, well, upstairs. Among other things we were at the observation decks of The Rockefeller Centre by day and of the Empire State Building by night along with as many as populate a minor island state. It was worth it on both counts. Today we're sailing: The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. |

Lots of lines in NY, still you would not want to miss Liberty Island.

Happy New Year from New York ♥
Went to the Radio City Rockettes Christmas Show - it was wonderful. Checked out Times Square - everybody is in a festive mood. They expect 1 mio people - the police is everywhere to take care of us - and we all wish each other a Happy New Year, on the bus, in cafés, on the street, and everybody smiles ♥♥♥ It feels like one world ♥ The New Yorkers never returned to their old aloof selves .... and we can live with that ![]() Oh, no, we shall not miss Lady Liberty, TLD, no way. If we have to we'll stand in line for three hours or more. Definitely. Yvonne & I have reservations for dinner at Alfredo. Yes, the New York brother of Alfredo in Rome, Italy, where Fettucini Alfredo was created. No more. No less. After that we'll change into battle dress and walk to Times Square ♥ Do take care each and every ♥ Base Camper ♥ |

Good Evening Base Campers!
Confession To be honest I cannot keep up ... I counted who was remaining with Team USMC, and we are two visiting Musketeers and two regular Base Campers Christopher Herr [TeaM] KWSN-Gemjunkie[TeaM] Dan Holtz oliviathefirst - I'm sorry it has gotten out of hand for me, so please accept my thank you for your contributions to Base Camp's Christmas Trek all of you who moved on between now and a few days ago ![]() Base Camp's New Years Trek As to our current Trek tents belonging to deltavee dl1000v RAMMIE USAFA 82 have shot up. Welcome ![]() Touristy stuff: ![]() We were in luck. No lines at the Liberty/Ellis Island ferries whatsoever - tickets, boarding of boat went seamlessly .... Also, the weather was the prettiest imaginable, so it was one big pleasure visiting the Islands of Liberty and Ellis. Afterwards we had a perfect late lunch at the Tribeca Grill owned by Robert de Niro. You shouldn't go there because it's owned by this great actor, but because they serve food that make the angels sing and at reasonable prices. Two days earlier we tried to visit Ground Zero but couldn't get visitor passes, and today that place was closed.. You don't get anywhere as a tourist if you take a no for a no. We negotiated our way and did a good deal of footwork, literally and figuratively, and ... we got in. The memorial is beautifully created. It brings tears to ones eyes. We had already met many people have scars from that day: The computer programmer of Spanish descent on the bus with her photographic memory of the people who fell out of the building when the planes crashed into them, the police officer who knew all of his colleagues who were lost, and the city bus driver who used to bring J. P. Morgan workers to work and home again - they all perished ... I have photos and I'll make a link when I have organised them. Tomorrow we'll visit the lobby of my favourite Chrysler Building and go to MoMA. After that we'll split up. Yvonne has finally realised she shall not make a shopper out of me on this trip, so she'll cover Macy's while I'll drift around ... |
