Re: Some concerns regarding the granted points

Hey Ya!!
keiko01, the point aspect is the fun aspect of the whole thing. We all know the deadly seriousness of what is really going on here. We also know that our friends, family, and even ourselves may be very grateful for the benefits derived from our collective crunch time research.
Chill, 'cause it's about thrills, partner. And thrills is what's good for all of us. Get some endorphins running through our bodies, ya know!
Also, when you have been here long enough, you might become savvy at spotting quirks in the system. To many of us are willing to just let things smoothly move along their hum drum course, because we do not want to rock the boat. And that's why our world is in the dire mess it is in today. cool rose good luck

angry Back to normal watchdog mode: Woof!

I started crunching 5 years ago I think. Cancer was my reason. Sadly I'm one of those that can't run the project here without being penalized as far as points go. No one really seems to care about that either. I should be gracious and say oh thank you great one for letting me crunch the other projects here. Best not question that attitude or you'll get the you only care about the points routine.

These are not my words, but it is a common thought for many. What gets me is how easy it is to be a problem here. I am only following up on this, as it effects me 3 ways:

1) I was going to run WCG Sports. This would bring the needed organization to the team challenges here. It would serve as a prototype for any automation development without cost to WCG. The problem that prevents me from starting the games is this project. It is so flawed that if I did open, it would show clearly that this stain. Hehe, so if you think I am a problem, just think what I could have been.

2) Lost a crewman:
I guess you see why I left then. I set WCG to no more new work, coz my fleet of PCs was just getting better (the number did not increase, but I upgraded systems) and my result count lowered along with my points. Since the points system is given, it must mean that my PCs were doing less work with slowly but growing resources. For me it means that the code is wrong. It needs optimization. My problem is not the quantity of points, but that my PCs could do less work for ever growing costs on my side. I chose another project that I think is worth the resources and IS optimized enough to run smoothly on the x86 platform...
I think that spending our resources on projects yielding more and more erroneous results is just a waste of power.

It is not that we don’t loose crew. It is the way the loss occurred.

3) I have 4 machines here. None here can run HCC without watching my stats go down the tubes. See, I can stand this, but can everyone? Apparently not.

Now I can only hope you see what I am saying in this. For if this goes too much farther, your sheep might get infected.

Re: Back to normal watchdog mode: Woof!

We have reached the point where we sit back and wait for the technicians to solve the problem.

You say it's a problem that will "show clearly that this stain". Sorry, I think you are completely exaggerating the situation.

Please demonstrate a little patience.

Surely you know that problems like this are common in grid computing? What makes World Community Grid exceptional is that they always address the problems. It just takes time.

devilish Re: Back to normal watchdog mode: Woof!

huh, was it not that Didactylos wrote that January was debugging month. Maybe suggest to WCG to reintroduce CPU minimum requirements for Conquer Cancer and up front shut out anyone not meeting the optimal system specifications? If it's not solvable it might be the only option left, but would not want speculate how your 'sheep' will react to that.

Re: Back to normal watchdog mode: Woof!

It has been said a few times, now.

I'm sorry they escaped your notice. A "Known Issues" post might have helped, but usually they are reserved for more immediate problems. Besides, it's amazing how often posts in "Member News" and "Known Issues" get overlooked... :-)

Re: Back to normal watchdog mode: Woof!

This shows that the problem is a solvable one. I don't have it (much) on my one-core machine, so I have been just guessing why it hits other people so hard. It looks as though it will be some sort of problem such as Highwire suggested.

The techs are aware of this problem (and several others) but I won't start nagging them until after New Year's Day.

What day is it today?
courine, Jan 19

The reason why I don’t go into other stains, is this one effect our future.

Notice D, I am trying to be nice about this. Otherwise I would have been here sooner. Like Dec 21. If I wanted to cause real harm, I would ramp up WCG Sports and use it as a tool, backwards. Not use it to bring awareness to DC computing and WCG, but as a focus on how "wonderful" the HCC project is for points. It would drive everyone out of HCC that was involved, new and old alike. The harm would not be the “the driving out” part, it would be the advertisement of the stain.

Now, one month in, what timeframe are we looking at for a fix? Once that is more definite, I can stop watching this thread until the time elapses.

Oh, and D, I have "Known Issues" and "Member News" on watch. If anything there was to be viewed reguarding this thread, I would have seen it. Where is the thread you talk about?

courine, I had no idea you felt this way and might use our fun and innocent team challenges to cause harm. If you did decide to do this, I would not enter my team in your games, if you wish to intentionally cause harm you will be on your own.

You're missing the point. Her comment was addressed at people questioning her motivations. It wasn't a threat. I'm pretty thick and even I was able to see that.
