My earlier post wasn't meant to come across as a personal attack----if it read that way then I apologise. However I did not tell you to "shut up"-I was merely implying that perhaps you are going a touch overboard with this. DC will take you over if you let it-your point has been made, and folk are sensible enough to make their own decisions about how they wish to proceed. They can read the queries to the devs and see that there is an issue, and that said devs are aware of it. Whatever you crunch, crunch on ![]() |

No prob Viao, just the 'rule of thumb' has been to treat me as an enemy. You just came in on the tail end.
----------------------------------------This is the post where I have informed my team of the HCC problem. The "storm warning" here should look the same, just more general as to point at all WCG. OK, I'm wondering how things are going in regards to HCC work units. What we need to find out is what kind of machines crunch this work unit effectively. I believe that cargod is running ok, but a few of us may be slowing way down running HCC. This is OK if you understand this is happening and consent, but if you are not sure and have seen a dip in your points stats since the project began, then please feel free to steer clear until the HCC project has broken in a bit more. The 2 categories of systems that I have seen most at risk: the slower than 1ghz and multicore machines. This doesn’t mean you are at risk of you machine, just that the crunching may seem slower or running inefficiently. This note is not a directive, but an advisory. Many of us can stand the rough waters that DC is known for. For the new member though, a wrong wave can find them overboard. So, like any good ships captain, I’m just alerting you to a stormy sea. I was working on a xmas email, but then noticed that there may be a problem and will be including this post in the email as well. So please, let me know how you are crunching! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Illusions of grandeur (can harm even a healthy mind)…
----------------------------------------Nobody hates anybody here. We don’t know each other. Happy crunching to everybody here. And for those with "Illusions of grandeur", don't forget that even for the Roman generals that had a Triumph, there was somebody in the back that keep telling them: "Remember that you are mortal". If you didn't had your heart attack yet, or your car accident, or you sudden passing yet, that doesn't mean that you can be sure you will still live tomorrow. So people, thinking how short our life is, let's not fight in stupid battles. With joy, Me or I |

The roman generals, returning from war, would ride in a procession. On the chariots with them was a slave that held a crown over the head of the victorious. While whispering a reminder, "That all glory is fleeting."

----------------------------------------Courine, Adywebb; WCG aren't so easily embarrassed. They have always been open about what is going on, so how can the truth hurt them? The only thing that can hurt them is if people exaggerate the problem. This is just one of several routine performance and stability issues. Other things the techs are having to deal with right now are: * Occasional stability problems with Mac hosts * The failure rate of HCC on Linux hosts * ACH needs a lot of close attention * There are still reports of Vista teething troubles I hope this gives a little perspective. The CAs nudge the techs when required, but continuous nagging is counter-productive. Courine, Adywebb; I know you got burned by grid.org's empty promises. Haven't WCG done enough by now to show that they don't behave in the same way? Fixes take time, but the techs are working flat out on your behalf. And the techs who spend time answering questions here are the *same* techs who should be busy solving the problems. That's why, much of the time you are left with us CAs to relay the status reports (or lack thereof). Didactylos - I'm afraid you have got completely the wrong end of the stick with reference to me in this thread. My reference to 'embarrassment' had nothing to do with WCG, but referred to the embarrassment of the way this thread has denigrated into farce and completely away from the issues it was trying to address. As regards me being 'burned at Grid.org' - I had little connection at all with Grid.org, in fact I have been here at WCG since 2005 joining 10 days before you. I am well aware that the Techs here do the best they can, and I am always one of the first to thank them for their hard work. I thought it would have been clear from my posts that my sole purpose here in this thread has been to try to keep it on track and allow knreed and the Techs clear space to report their findings and allow members to assist them where possible - hence when it seemed impossible for this to happen I posted another thread, and leave this one for the squabbling. I don't know whether it was deliberate or not, but please do not try to associate in any way my actions with that of Courines. Thank you, Ady ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jan 28, 2008 9:33:37 PM] |

Sorry, Ady - I must have conflated your embarrassment comment with Courine's.
Still, the techs have plenty of visible places to post important updates. The less important updates do sometimes get lost. |

No problem D - just wanted to make it clear.
Hopefully if the other thread is kept clear for purely technical updates on Kevins testing, then it will be a useful interactive tool to assist him with any observations at the members end - he will no doubt see the thread, but perhaps you could give him a nudge in the right direction if he has any further testing updates as it would be nice to keep them in one place ![]() |

We are in the midst of researching this issue. Please give us some time and we'll get back to you when we have something useful to report.
Meanwhile we are locking this thread. Thank you. |
