A wee thingy that might help people understand.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Page_fault Minor page fault If the page is loaded in memory at the time the fault is generated, but its status is not updated as 'present' in hardware, then it is called a minor or soft page fault. Major page fault If the page is not loaded in memory at the time the fault is generated, then it is called a major or hard page fault. Major faults are more expensive than minor page faults and add disk latency to the interrupted program's execution. This is the mechanism used by an operating system to increase the amount of program memory available on demand. The operating system delays loading parts of the program from disk until the program attempts to use it and the page fault is generated. |

Sorry for the silence. We are investigating this problem. We are currently running some pair-wise tests to determine what is causing the slow down. What I mean by pair-wise is that we manually sending a workunit for FightAIDS@Home and a workunit for Help Conquer Cancer to the same two computers that have the characteristics that we want to check. For example here is the outcome of one of these tests: Computer #1 is my laptop. It is running a Intel Pentium M running at 2.0GHz with 2GB of DDR Ram Computer #2 is my home desktop. It is running a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ running at 2.7GHz with 2GB of DDR2 Ram FightAIDS@Home workunit 'faah2961_ZINC00000480_xMut_md02740_00' had the following results: Computer #1 ran the workunit in 7.6 hours and claimed 83.238 credits for the workunit. Computer #2 ran the workunit in 6.1 hours and claimed 94.623 credits for the workunit (20% faster then the pentium M) Help Conquer Cancer workunit 'X0000046720001200502241630' had the following results: Computer #1 ran the workunit in 7.8 hours and claimed 85.014 credits for the workunit Computer #2 ran the workunit in 8.2 hours and claimed 128.109 credits for the workunit (5% slower then the pentium M) The next step we are going to do repeat this test but force the AMD dual core to only run one workunit at a time to see if eliminates the drop in performance for the dual core machine. If you'd like some more machines to test this on you can use some of mine. I have P4's and quad cores. I can throw together a machine with an E6700 too. It may take me a couple of days to get it together and running. I'm not sure that I have all the needed parts, but I know I have most of them. I can set them up any way you like. The P4's have 32 bit XP Home. Quad cores have 32 bit XP Pro, 32 bit Vista Business, and 64 bit Vista Ultimate. If I put together a machine with the Conroe (E6700) I'll use the trial version on Server 2008 (it's FREE until June). ![]() |

Great news, knreed, that you are testing these WU. Could you please also pair your machine up with a machine that does them in 4 hrs and a machine that does them in 12+ hrs? Hoping you will see what happens when the points show they are out of wack when not paired with another computer of EQUAL runtime. This would help very much. ![]() Thank you for working to sort all this out. Respectfully, Diana G. ![]() |

Thanks Kneed,
----------------------------------------The reason why I was watching this thread was really to make sure the focus was not lost. Not to say is had, but to be sure it hadn’t. When I saw the CA's seemingly playing down the impact this problem could have, there needed to be a show of concern. What happens when a problem with the tech end of a project is identified here? You need to disclose the hazard to allow consent of passage. Otherwise any traffic beyond that point by those hit by a problem unknowingly, will challenge their faith. An in the high seas of research, faith may be all you got. This is why there are “small craft’s advisories”. It is to allow public consent. How do I know this? I am a maritime captain as well. I need to see resolution here so I can proceed with the league. A league that would help expand the Team Challenge system and reduce the need for WCG's administration's involvement. Right now I am seen the end of the bell curve for team involvement in the challenges. I hope that this problem resolves first, before the need for leagues at all, vanishes. If it takes napalm to get the job done, then napalm it is!

The stage she thinks is there is a wall size WCG flag. And now with a swagger stick under her arm, speaks:] We are here together today to fight on a front that plagues all of mankind. A war against an enemy we can’t see or touch. A war with to few weapons to defend ourselves let alone attack. A war against something that could strike us all, civilian and combatant alike! This war, our war, is on one of the broadest fronts of human exploration, even though microscopic in detail. A war to end the mysteries of life that cause unimaginable suffering. But it is war, even though its horror, is what brings out the best in a soldier, and destroys all that is base. War may be mankind’s greatest inhumanity but its also mankind’s greatest triumph. Or as Churchill would put it 'their finest hour.' To turn off your machine is to not fight! Realize I’ve slapped a soldier for less (and got in a bunch of trouble with Ike for that), but i would do it again if it meant the purification of 1 more system. To fight on a selfless front of its own, supporting research. Finding the tools to help us rid ourselves of the pain caused by our enemy. And to deny any true soldier from its destiny is not just an act against ourselves, but against God. It is here that I would turn to a chaplain to write a prayer for battle. I had one do it in the past for better weather. Considering the circumstances, I bet my ivory-handled revolvers he can do it again! For this is a holy cause. If you look into the eyes of any stricken by our foe, you would pray to God it wasn’t so. I realize most of you HATE MY GUTS! After the Battle of the Bulge, I wouldn’t blame you. Day after day of forced marches and battle, even I began to hate me. But I knew that reaching the brave men of the 101th, surrounded by [the enemy], would change the tide of the war by showing what the 3rd Army was made of. You cant imagine my pride. So if you want to hate me, go ahead. But realize I know someone who hated me more than anyone, that fascist wallpaper hanging bustard in Berlin! We can all look at war as a great failing of mankind, but it often takes war to focus a group to do a job beyond expectation. To then focus its resources with knowledge, putting forth this combined might to then smite at thyn foe without quarter. If you don’t believe me, ask Rommel, I always guaranty a good fight! For this is the lot we draw. To go forth and fight battle after selfless battle in a seemingly endless war. But all things eventually come to pass. As for what we are and what this will become, with the gentle guidance of The All Mighty, we shall prevail! As you were, Gen. George Patton US 3rd Army. [Courine salutes all that have gathered, proudly with the empowerment of all the souls that have ever fallen in battle. Then she starts to pull out of the delusion. She wonders where the helmet came from. Weak from the attack, she sits down and notices a newspaper ad:] Oh my! Im missing the “White Sale at MACY’S”!!!! Gotta run, btw leave it on! bbl ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 6 times, last edit by courine at Jan 26, 2008 8:52:36 PM] |
