using your GPUs in support of the HCC project

To All USMC Team Members -

I received this suggestion from Tomahawk4196 (a USMC team member) that I want to pass on to you, its about using your GPUs in support of the HCC project.

"There is a short-term opportunity for the team to catch up on points and results, if folks can maximize their GPU compute time, for the HCC project. However, this GPU computing is only supposed to last for another 60 to 70 days, so folks have to make their adjustments quickly.

If folks have recent video cards in their computers, they can make some adjustments to their BOINC installation and generate hundreds of thousands of points per day.

I've been at or above 1,000,000 points per day for the past few weeks, and it is likely some others can do this easily, too.

At 347,000,000, the US Navy is a bit ahead of us in points, but we can catch up to them if we work together.

What video card do you have in your machine?

The most recent ATI Radeon cards are the best for this particular project (HCC), but the nVidia cards can also make a dramatic increase in contributions, versus the standard CPU projects.

There's also a lot of information about how to proceed on the HCC and GPU support forums."

Thanks to Tomahawk4196 for this excellent suggestion and Semper Fi - ski1939 (USMC team captain)

Re: using your GPUs in support of the HCC project

Here is additional information from - Tomahawk4196

Because this GPU computing effort is new to World Community Grid team, there are going to be some kinks to work out - in fact, they experienced a bit of a problem on Friday, but they have it sorted out now (Saturday). The only thing I'd like to see from WCG is a definitive page dedicated to GPU efforts, because I find that I have to do a little hunting to get the best information about hardware selections and software settings. It is all on the forum pages, but it's not really centralized yet .... they're working on it. Here are two pages that folks will want to review:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=GPU#620

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/listthreads?forum=560

Much of this is beyond the available time or interest that many people have, but for those who want to follow along for an hour or two, the increase can be dramatic. My average production prior to October 10 was between 50,000 and 70,000 points per day. Then when the GPU computing became available, I made a new 'hardware profile' at WCG (log into your account, go to Device Manager > Device Profiles), and I saw an increase in production of 4x, to over 300,000 PPD.

Team members who want to further boost points for the team (and for themselves) may also want to upgrade their video cards, which is what I've done. I bought three new video cards (two for my machine, one for my wife's) and now my average has increased approximately 20x, to around 1,000,000 PPD.

Many of us have been waiting for GPU computing to be included at WCG for a long time - now that it's here, we want to get the best tools we can .... whatever it takes to help find these cures.

Thanks again.

Re: Welcome aboard

rickss69:

Yes, welcome indeed; we (USMC and WCG) will take as much help as we can get.

You mention mixed GPUs 'for effect' - which effect are you after, there? Which cards are you mixing? The only WCG project currently using GPUs is Help Conquer Cancer, and that work goes at least twice as fast on an ATI card as on a comparable nVidia card.

I've been running ATI cards controlled by app_info.xml files, but those are being phased out .... possibly just in time for the GPU workload for HCC to run out, in June ;---)

Anyhow, thanks again for helping pull the sled, and we look forward to seeing you shoot up the charts.

I'm kind of short on ATI cards atm. Running one 5850 with two GTX 460's right now. Going to pull the 460's in favor of two GTX 295's shortly and test. Yes, HCC is what I'm running right now.
