Hey UNiRAC I have nothing against science. Science is cool and the science on all the various projects of the World Community Grid is cool too.

But the Global Warming debate has nothing to do with Science and that's the whole point of the Greenies thread.

We are just trying to bring the observed reality back into the discussion against Al Gores fear mungering that our Government in particular (The UK) has used to bring in enormous hikes in taxation and re-introduced the potential for the disaster waiting to happen that is Nuclear Power.


Now if you really think that the Polar Ice Cap has disappeared and the Polar Bears are drowning here's the reality

I have nothing against true green renewable energy (Just to make clear that Nuclear Power is anything but) and new Green Technologies. We are currently trying to prove the viability of House Mounted Wind Turbines (with a bit of Science)

Sorry, but if the debate is about sustainable energy supply
Not pie in the sky technologies Then wind power is not the answer at this time I can see a wind farm from my house Ten wind turbines 60% of the time not working
this means that there has to be equivalent amount of alternate power on standby
Claims that wind farm X will produce enough power for x number of homes doesn't work Tidal barrage , pumped storage and wave power are good options But of course need to be in place fairly soon or at least the plans for them
Conventional Power stations are required for base load requirement
You also need some flexible power generation that can be ramped up when demand increases At this time
Nuclear Power is good for base load .The safety debate is scare mongering

the quantity of waste from Nuke Ps is very small
and can be managed
Chernoble and 3 mile island events are rare Okay I know they happend but Nuclear regulation methods of operation are much tighter now
Nuclear power doesnt = Bomb

The power we get from the "natural environment"
wind wave solar is fickle only available at the whim of nature ...

We do need conventional power sources
and in the conventional I place Nuclear
How you manage the resource is important
what is your objection to this element of power


Bear in mind that as island we are dependant now on import of most fuels coal oil or nuclear
we do have reserves of some fuels
"in house"


I don't understand your objections to
the power raising aspects of Nuclear power stations
against coal or oil PS.
like the thoughts of wind and tidal but do you know the time scale
a lot of nimby peeps are against the projects but want to be able to get up in the middle of the night to go to the loo /flush the toilet make a brew all with the lights on
as I said before so far we haven't sorted out stored Electricity

other than pumped storage
