D I have never equated NP to Nuclear Weapons
----------------------------------------Just bringing together all of that radioactivity into one spot and having a "controlled" potentially runaway reaction is risk enough and then you are left, after it has stopped being warm, with a substance that remains life threateningly radioactive for a thousand generations A top idea to solve a problem we don't have If that's not bonkers I don't know what is btw it's snowing in Jerusalem http://www.flickr.com/photos/talsilver/tags/snowinjerusalem/ ![]() |

Ah, but you didnt see what I said about "Whether or not a bomb." The waste itself is a weapon. A weapon all to easy to use.

Courine made that comparison, not you, David.
As for the risks - I'm not a risk assessor, but I did learn in school about the layers of safety that nuclear power stations have. For a meltdown to occur, you have to have many, many failures. In the case of Three Mile Island, there were several design flaws, and a whole series of errors. Chernobyl, on the other hand, was just plain unsafe - a whole catalogue of errors and design flaws. Most reactors in operation today are a new, safer generation of reactor designs. I do worry about the safety of the ancient reactors still in operation, but I worry less about reactors being built today. The next generation of reactors should be even safer. Pebble bed reactors look particularly good. |

I was aware that it was courine that made the statement
----------------------------------------I was just stating the risks without the "bomb" element if that alone is an insane idea how much more so with the additional risks outlined by courine? ![]() |

Think about this, "Why do they have to contain it so much?" The real hard part is the reactors and the dumps together make a great military target.

"The waste itself is a weapon"? That's not such a simple issue as it looks.
You can't just take a few spent fuel rods and make a nuclear bomb. But a dirty bomb - that would be bad. But it wouldn't be a nuclear explosion, and the problem would be contamination, not fallout. On balance, though, a normal bomb is easier to make than a dirty bomb, so if I were you, I'd worry about conventional terrorism. Nuclear terrorism is still just the stuff of movies. |

It would take only a "cheapy" surface effect ordinance to get through most anything commercial, as it stands.
----------------------------------------The waste stored right at the site? I can hear the pilot saying, when he ID's the target, "Oh, Freebie!", as his acquisition is now 2 for the price of 1 sale. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Oh D,
----------------------------------------That cask is child’s play. But that is the problem, as it would be over aged children that would call in this strike: F117, F117, this is control Tiger Alpha. F117, Roger. F117, F117, mission target in sight? F117, Affirmative. Target package 3rd car back. Commence attack vector? F117, F117, Negative. Stand on station until package enters hi penetration zone for ingress. F117, Aye Aye. Standing on station. Awaiting target package to go metro. 3 for 1 sale? F117, F117, Confirmed! F117, transmission concluded. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I'll pretend I understood that.
No, wait - I won't. I didn't. I have no idea what your concern is. |
