Re: New Beta badges awarded

I don't agree with making Beta badges easier to get.

David_L6. You didn't say why you don't agree making Beta Badges easier to get....

If more Betas were run (enough to work out the bugs) on new projects the badge would automatically be easier to get due to the additional work units.

Whatever WCG wants to do.... I'm no longer crunching anyway (except for some Beta tests - maybe). I never did it for badges when I was crunching. In fact, there weren't any badges when I started crunching.

Re: New Beta badges awarded

I think WCG will benefit more if it will implement 2 things in the badge system:

First - Create more Levels for Badges, so people who've got they're Gold can compete more between themselfs, thus contributing more to those projects they have Gold on.
Second - Reward members more easily on "hard to get" or "little" projects like AfricanClimate@Home, Beta and future little projects, because on those projects it becomes more of a luck game than a lazy atitude on the part of WCG members. We should limit "luck" playing a part in any competition.

When you have a project that needs 87,000 years of crunching, there can be no value to rewarding people for crunching just a few days. What we need are badges for crunchers with YEARS of crunching, not days. Getting 87,000 years takes 2.2 MILLION Beta badges and we only have about 80,000 crunchers each day. What? You want a new badge for every week?

AC@H is hard to get because of the hardware and communications requirements, which is why it takes less to get the badges.

Getting badges on hard-to-get projects is not a matter of luck. If you have a buffer of 2 days YOU WILL NEVER get a Beta WU. Never, if the Beta has to be returned in 2 days. If you have 256 cable Internet, you will NEVER get an AC@H badge. Sorry. If you are crunching HPF2 exclusively, you are severely limiting your probability of seeing a Beta WU, because of the long WU length. Now that FA@H is going to a shorter WU length, that may help many people.

If you get a Beta WU by luck then you get one or two. If thats all you got for the original CEP Beta, then you were lucky. I am able to have a small buffer, in my situation, and that affords me the opportunity to score well with Beta WU and also with a fairly high occurrence of repair WUs. I even got several repair Beta WU on my reliable systems for CEP. If and when AC@H comes back to life, I don't know what my chances are going to be.

Re: New Beta badges awarded

Nobody here is doing it for Badges. They are doing it to help. In addition to that, they are also doing it also for Badges. Also, the Badge system is great to channel the WCG power to projects that are in need for more power at the beginning of the project.

I guess they are putting as many Beta's WU's as they need to crunch. Nothing can do about that.
But making WCG members crunch for a personal goal (let's say achieving as many Badges you can, thus calculating your crunch effort throughout the years) is a wonderful way of helping crunchers improve they're crunching skills.

I see that although you are not crunching anymore, you still have a Bronze Badge for The Clean Energy Project, so I bet that if they put a Platinum or Diamond Badge, you will go in your quest to get them on all the projects here.

Re: New Beta badges awarded

To astrolab.

Obviously, Platinum Badges will not be for a few more weeks of crunching. It will be for the WCG coordinators to set up the next goal for the next Badge after Gold witch can be hundreds (ex. 300) of days worth of crunching and Diamond (1000) even in thowsands of days for the heavy lifters and maybe Quantum Badge for (10000) tens of thousands of days.

Uh huh..... confused Some people must be crunching for badges or there wouldn't be a thread about getting badges. You must be crunching for badges or you wouldn't want to make it easier to get a badge.

Put your money up!

I bet that if they put a Platinum or Diamond Badge, you will go in your quest to get them on all the projects here.

As I posted earlier, I was crunching before there were badges. I didn't crunch a single work unit just so that I could get a badge.

Put your money where your mouth is. I'll cover it. money eyes

Hey David glad to see that you continue among us, crunching or not. For all projects in WCG, and based on your fantastic crunch history here, I sincerely would like that you return crunch.

maybe just one project from your personal interest, maybe two. Up to you friend. I wonder see you crunching with us again, despite of all bull sheets that I read away and despite of all intolerance that I can felt in many posts away. be safe. keep focus on help the science. Just do it, with or without badges from any kind of quilate ! Just for fan for example ! biggrin cool coffee

Re: Put your money up!

Anyway... I guess I should try to stop thinking to develop (energize) WCG attitude towards getting "more bang for the buck". It will be really stupid for a member to care more about WCG growth than WCG itself.
But for everybody here with the same enthusiast towards Distributed Computing Growth as some I see in this thread, I have to mention that DC it's not just about putting your computers to use, it's also putting your mind & heart in it.
I don't want to insult anybody here, but there are active crunchers and passive crunchers. And only active crunchers increase DC by more than just they're computers... It is all about growth, not just crunching.

Shout out from the Mac users here who will never get beta badges.... :( As it is, I can't even get beta work units for my one PC with all my profiles checked for beta.. Not one hour of beta WUs has ever been downloaded for 8 computers.. :(

Oh holy beta grail of badge goodness, will I ever ever see you?

Have you reviewed any of the many posts on how to configure your system to receive Beta jobs? Are your system(s) on all the time? Are they ranked as reliable? Have you done everything that you can to optimize your chances? Do you monitor the Beta Forums for announcements?

As a member, you are pretty new to WCG too. With WCG averaging 1 Beta WU for every 2600 project WU, you have a ways to go to reach even an average number of WU for 1 Beta WU.
