Greetings,
We are changing the length each work units runs on your machine. The work units in the past have been estimated to run about 10 hours per work unit. This is an average over all the member machines. We are now targeting 6 hours per work unit with the new batches. The new batches that are targeting 6 hours each start with these batches: batch00253 - batch00300 batch00322 - batch00350 Batches before batch00253 are still on the 10 hour run time. Also batch00301 - batch00321 are targeting 10 hour run times in length. Sekerob has a nice graph in the FAQs that show the runtime averages for each project. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=18277 The graph I refer to is the labeled "WCG Project Task Average Run Time" Thank you again for your continued participation in World Community Grid! -Uplinger |

Sounds good.
Does this mean that the NRW jobs will be flowing freely again or is the project still being slowed down? |

This project is still going to run slowly for now. We will post something in the forums if something changes.

What kind of processor are you using as a baseline for the 6 hours estimate on the WU size?

Hello kskjold,
The actual processing times on our members' computers are used to set the average times. Lawrence |

For the RICE project we use CPU time used to calculate the length for this project. Once 6 hours of CPU time is used, the science application exits and sends what your computer has completed back to us. This project is a little bit different in that aspect in comparison to our other projects.

Sounds strange....
----------------------------------------- If you use only 6 hours or 10 hours of CPU, regardless if the WU is completed or not, what is happening to the WU? - It is considered Incomplete? - How come the speed of the CPU doesn't make a difference for any given Rice WU? - What is behind the scientific logic that 6 hours of Pentium 2 are the same as 6 hours of a core from an overcloked QuadCore? I toughed Rice scientist are using CPU to simulate proteins. So the better the CPU the faster the WU. Something doesn't add here. PLEASE EXPLAIN ! |

I'm sorry if my explanation is strange.
Each calculation takes about 2 minutes on a normal machine. Then your computer checkpoints and checks to see if it passed the time in length. If it has, then it returns what it has completed, which on a fast machine may be 500 computations or on a slow machine it may be 200 computations. Each of these unique computations are used by the researchers. Work units are not considered incomplete once this run time limit is reached. This is why slower machines claim less on a work unit than a fast machine for RICE. Hope this helps, -Uplinger |

Sounds strange.... ... Something doesn't add here. PLEASE EXPLAIN ! damir1978, it has been discussed and explained months ago. Please see this post in the Start Here FAQS Credit computed for Nutritious Rice for the World for more details. Cheers. Jean. |

I'm still confused, but there is nothing new in that...
----------------------------------------I am currently getting rice work units that are estimated to run 20 hours, however they complete in about 10 hours. Does that mean that these are really 10-hour wu's? Or will the 10 hour wu's actually run to completion of 5 hours? Then the question becomes whether a 6 hour unit will actually complete in 3 hours, or will a 6 hour unit complete in 6 hours and show an estimated completion time of 12 hours? ![]() I think it's time for a nap! ![]() "Everything in moderation, including moderation" -- Mark Twain |
