yeah, I have a machine dedicated to CEP, it has never run out of work with a five day bucket. maybe CEP is only being sent to machines that are running it exclusivly? I just dedicated 2 PCs to CEP and immediately got some units. Emerald here I come! ![]() |

I rarely post to these forums, but I have to say I really do not like this change. The new badges look terrible. Getting to the top badge on all projects, or even the majority, will now forever be out of reach of almost everyone. I came for the work, but enjoyed the fun of the badge pursuit. Now it is no longer fun. Being the top in every project should be hard to obtain...If everybody can do it then it's not special. And I was thinking the whole point of the "badge"-system was so the "normal" users that never has any hope of ever reaching top-10000, but has been running WCG for a long time, also should have something to strive for, and get some recognition for their input... But, these new badges on the other hand, is clearly geared to the high-end-users, that already is (or very soon is) among top-10k by points... Any user running a single computer, with a single-core-cpu, has had the chance to get 10 gold-badges, as long as they started early enough, and changed project-configuration after getting gold. Why only 10 will someone maybe ask: 1; It's unrealistic "normal" users runs beta at all. 2; It was impossible to get any Africanclimate-work at all. 3; AFAIK one project was UD-only while another was BOINC-only at roughly the same time, meaning "normal" users could only get one of these badges, not both. 4; For obvious reasons, no single-core-user has yet got a gold in Influenza or HCMD2, since it's less than 90 days since project-launch. The Influenza and HCMD2 gold-badges is reachable later this year, but not yet. This brings total upto 3 years continuous running. The new badges starting with Ruby on the other hand, equals nearly 6 years continuous crunching for 12 badges, something that is impossible, since WCG haven't been running for 6 years yet. And of course, Emerald and Sapphire is even more unrealistic, since many projects isn't even close to have been running for 2 years yet... Instead of adding the new badges that is unrealistic for the "normal" users that atleast in my understanding was the intended audience for the badges in the 1st. place, could instead either: a; Add some point-based-medals or something (not badges), so high-end-users could get these instead. b; Change the old badge-system, so everyone must work just as hard for a gold-badge, regardless of having a single computer, or having access to work-computers with 1000+ cores. For a high-end user, letting his work-computers run for less than a day for a gold-badge makes the gold-badge worthless. But, if he instead must run his work-computers for 90 days, just like the single-computer single-core-user must do, the gold would means something to him, and be something to work forward to. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. The new badges aren't that big of a deal. A single core/single cpu guy can still get gold in all of them. Heck, if he runs his computer 24/7 and is obsessed with one project he can get a saphire. These badges seem geared toward the best if you want to be color-coordinated.

Now it is no longer fun. I think you have to just strive for what you can. I admit I'm lucky to have the machines available to me that i do, but I also think getting *any* badge is an achievement. One of the issues with this type of computing is getting people to continue to participate. I think this whole badge idea helps people who have been around for awhile stay motivated to continue and not move to other projects. Just my two cents ![]() |

Dear Badgers
----------------------------------------... My 2c worth ... Very pretty, and now we can see who concentrates on which projects. For a while. BTW, not everybody wants to have the top badge for every project. I think the spread of award levels should be very wide, and I would have made the new levels 1, 5 and the highest at 10, 20 or even 50 years. We have the easy lower levels to encourage the newcomers, but I think the top ones should be rare. The average number of CPU cores per device is increasing, so we'll be clocking up the CPU-years faster in the future, and many members will achieve high total run-times. BTW, the Stats pages currently show that member NightHawk59 holds the cut-off position for 50 CPU-years (all projects), at ranking no 244. I had thought of a system of "sashes" for the badges, along the lines of the belts awarded to practitioners of some martial arts. They could go diagonally, say from the top left and bottom right corners of the badges, but not overwrite the project logos. Some projects would need the sash in a different position. My sashes, in say red, green, blue & black, would have looked OK against the previous top of gold, but not so well against the blue. White & black would still work though. Finally, please keep the badge game in perspective. It's just a bit of fun. I don't think there will be used ones coming up for sale on eBay ![]() Goin' for my Black Belt in Blue Beta ... ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Rickjb at Jul 17, 2009 4:48:15 AM] |

I came here to post that the link to the page that shows all the badge permutations seems to be missing. (e,g., on my grid click on badges earned, goes to help page which says all badges can be shown "here"... but here is no longer a link.
----------------------------------------I won't likely see them myself, being reduced to one machine and heat-limited to one core. But I can get the idea of what they look like by checking this thread ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 15, 2009 1:58:18 AM] |

May I suggest 1 more?
Invisible (i.e. transparent background) badge for 4 years. ![]() And I haven't seen anyone mention the main Stats list on the MyGrid tab are now sorted by Points Generated instead of the task name as they used to sort... e.g. with ßeta (βeta?) at the top... no doubt that's now at the bottom for everyone. |

No, they're by status (active/completed), then by project launch date. FWIW, if it were by points, I'd have 2 projects below beta. |
