That's what I did with my daughter's machine. I stopped in one of the local computer stores and grabbed a wireless adapter cards. The physical installation was not into a USB port but instead a matter of opening the case and inserting the card into one of the available card slots. You'll most likely have a little metal cover on the back of the case that comes off so you can have the little antenna on the adapter card stick out the back of the machine. To connect the machine to the net without going wireless, ethernet is a common way to go. I have DSL with my phone company so I have a phone line that connects to the DSL modem. Then there is an ethernet cable from it to the wireless router. The wireless router also includes four ethernet connections so you should be able to just run an ethernet cable from the computer to your existing wireless router if it has those (they usually do). The wireless adapter card is about $40-50 and the flexibility is more than worth it. That's why I've said to make sure you have at least one or two available expansion slots on a new machine. When you go to buy the machine, you should be able to call their 800 number or start a chat session if you're doing it online. You can explain what you want to be able to add and have them confirm that what you're getting will have the room for that. |
