First computer was a Coleco ADAM, the *expansion module* version which plugged into the front of my ColecoVision. For some reason BASIC was on the "digital data pack" cassette, which was dangerous due ADAM's "surge of electromagnetic energy on startup, which can erase the contents of any removable media left in or near the drive." The word processor was in ROM for some reason, so at least that couldn't get erased :P . I think after the ADAM bought the farm, my dad got me an IBM PCjr. We were not good at picking successful systems to buy :) . At least the jr came with an incentive, a zero-coupon savings bond at an effective rate of something like 11%!! It cost the retailer on the order of $100 something and matured at $1000.
Mom brought home a genuine DEC VT100 (maybe 102?) that I used to dial in to our high school's PR1ME minicomputer. I remember really liking the smooth scrolling option that terminal had! -j |

Mine was an Acorn Atom built from a kit. This was the predecessor to the BBC micro.
----------------------------------------It started off with a less than massive 0.5kB RAM which I later upgraded to (I think) 12kB using hideously expensive 2114 static RAM chips. It didn't work at first because I'd carefully soldered every single electolytic capacitor the wrong way round. ![]() It had a 6502 processor and the built-in Basic allowed you to intersperse assembly code. Neat stuff. I added a 5.25" floppy drive later as well as a graphics add-on card. ![]() |

First one I owned, 1998 HP Pavillion. It was a left over with Windows 95. Bought it at Win98 launch party at Computer City. 3 mo later, paid 200.00 for a memory upgrade. 2 weeks later built my first AMD machine and have building and refurbishing my own ever since. Really enjoy refub Dell Poweredges.

Apple IIGS, it was badass back in the day. It had 16 colors vs the black and green screen Apple II's that preceded it. No hard drive the OS was stored on a ROM chip and everything had to be run off 5.25" or 3.25" floppies. A Dot Matrix printer completed the beast.
----------------------------------------Had some good times with that one, California Games was probably the pinnacle of IIGS gaming :) ![]() |

TI 99/4A. 1981. Built-in Basic. Stored programs to cassette tape. It was heaven.

First PC I ever operated was a Digital Rainbow 100+.
128k RAM (eventually upgraded to 256k), 10MB hard disk partitioned in two:- half running MS-DOS v2.05 and the other half running CP/M. Two 5.25" floppy disks. Attached was a printer LA100 capable of taking 14.5" x 11" continuous form paper. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_100 ![]() After being introduced to the Rainbow, I received basic training in MS-DOS using an IBM PC-XT with the old unenhanced keyboard...... |
