Re: At this rate

Hmm I think I understand the points made, and I can see skgivens point. If a large team of crunchers comes to WCG to help a specific project that is close to their hearts such as HCMD, their members might reasonably expect that crunching HCMD exclusively would speed up the completion time of their project.

In reality because of the project levelling in the feeders they'd speed up the HCMD project just as much if they all crunched CEP WU's because of the way WU's are distributed.

If I understand correctly skgivens argument he is suggesting that the feeders are topped up by adding extra project specific WU's to top up those extracted from the "All Projects" WU pool by dedicated single project crunchers.

By compensating in this way the balance of work in the pool received by "All Projects" crunchers would remain in line with the original project weighting, and those wishing to dedicate their efforts to a single project would see their efforts rewarded by a slightly quicker finish for that project as their WU's would be in addition to the general share, rather than part of it.

Sounds reasonable to me.

It does sound reasonable, but that is not what WCG does. Crunchers do not get to decide the priority on the projects. WCG has made a committment to ALL of the projects to crunch their WU, but does not force any one cruncher to support any project.

Just because cruncher A does not support project B does not mean that project B is going to be penalized as long a cruncher C supports project B. You get to support whatever project you want, but you do not get to punish a project if you opt out, because WCG as a whole still supports all projects. Deal with the reality.

Re: At this rate

this is a very interesting discussion, I totally understand Skgiven's point. Skgiven is NOT saying he wants the ability to penalize any project. Skgiven is complaining about the fact that his/her extra crunch time can not truly be geared towards one project. The extra time may be directed to one project of his/her choosing, but the end result is that it goes into a big pool for all projects.
A very similar argument happens all the time during election season. There are usually propositions to raise taxes for 1 thing, like schools. When this happens LOTs of people were saying all of this money will go to schools and it will help kids. Now this in reality is about 75% true. This is because technically all of the money will go to schools, but in reality is that the politicians also planned on reducing school funding to help fund other projects. This is what happened during the last election in Az. The politicians straight out and said that even if the 1% sales tax passes for schools, there will be school cuts. Now the general public didn't listen to this, all they think about is this money goes to the kids. Saying the tax is for kids was just a sales pitch to rally public support.

Now let me say that I do NOT believe that WCG is intentionally doing this. WCG is non-profit and are just trying to help the world. WCG and other program like this are great and I support them. I also understand from a technical point of view it may be difficult for WCG to make it so Skgiven can truly speed up the completion of a project and they have higher priorities, but some people will complain. But nothing in the world is perfect, even that slice of cake I had for dinner last night. If it was then the cake would be have lots of health benefits for me and should be recommended as part of everyone's daily diet. Maybe some scientist can help me out and create a project for that

Re: At this rate

I just want to make sure everyone understands that WCG is still a GREAT program and we should all try to help it. WCG may have its problems but please don't let them prevent you from supporting this program.
Any problems it may have are not intentional (at least I don't believe so). The people that work for them are doing their best and we should all applaud them for their great work.
Some of us may have some complaints, but that is normal. Nothing is perfect, telling them our complaints let them know of them and if they can they will address it.

Back to the original topic of this thread:

it's two months later and we're only at 244,000 out of 44,000,000, or 0.5% complete. Are we ever going to get more than a trickle of WUs here and there?

P.S.: Please split off your own thread if you want to have a discussion about project weights/etc. Thanks!

Re: At this rate

esoteric, we recently got 5200 type A WU, which gave us 10400 type B WU (don't believe all of these were sent out yet, think only about half got sent out). Each type B WU creates about 250 to 350 type C WU, so we should get a big influx of type C WU soon, along with the rest of the type B.

Thank you for the information. I stopped reading the "it's raining dengue" thread a while ago because it was always small batches.

Re: At this rate

still waiting for rain of WU's ... personaly i have almost given up on working for a badge for this project cause of the slow start. If this project continues at this rate i will probably level off at a bronze badge or silver for this project while i work for other badges.. Mind you I want to crunch this project but i am not waiting for it or try to make my machines find these work units when they come out in short batches
