Jack, I can understand your sadness!
----------------------------------------But, there are solutions...like replacing the quads with octo-core 5960X (16 threads) and/or going for a dual-socket board and Xeons. Of course, all this comes at a pretty nasty price (but if you sell the parts from the other PCs then perhaps it may give some relief?). Another options is indeed to stack mini-PCs on top of eachother :) I have four PCs (chassies) at home in my 2-room condo, although I haven't had the time to get any more than two of them crunching. But HTPC is a great way to get a second computer up, even one's better half may approve of it...I guess...never had a better half though... Be well and stay safe!
