biggrin Re: Join The International Team

Good afternoon all. A family from our church have recently gotten a dog and now their landlord wants an additional $250.00 a month increase in rent for the dog and also $2,000.00 dollars to replace the carpeting when they move. The family is going to find a new place to live that will accept a pet under better conditions. My wife and I love dogs and do not have one at this time. We are going to let the dog live with us until they find a new place to live. I would hate to see this family have to loose their dog that they have grown to love due to this predicament. It should be an adventure taking care of a Great Dane (at least very interesting!!!!)

They are terrific dogs. I have had 3 and loved each of them very much. Currently I have an English Mastiff and 4 Giant Schnauzers. Three of the Schnauzers are only puppies, but they still count. Throw in an orange Tabby and a Russian Blue cat and it gets to be quite the zoo around here. At one time there were 13 Giant Schnauzers, thankfully the number has returned to a more manageable level.

They are better than kids. They only ask for affection, food, and water. In exchange you get a constant companion that truly misses you when you are gone and rejoices upon your return.

Keep preaching Dave but I'm not getting a dog. I love having Patches (border collie) here when Ashley wants me to keep her but that's only for a day or 4.

Y'all have a great day cool

Re: Join The International Team

Wouldn't think of trying to convince someone to get a dog. They come upon the decision on their own, or not at all. I have mine simply because I wanted him, bonus benefits.

davwhite5xq7, I definitely agree with this. It is a personal choice and comes from the individual...I have seen too many dogs given up because some people just want the bonuses a dog brings but they don't realize the effort and costs of keeping a dog happy and healthy. It is a long term commitment....

I' m going to loose close to 90 hours a week of Crunching time as one of the two PCs I use will be shut down from midnight until about 8 am and down all weekend due to a work shutdown policy. But, at least I'll still be Crunching on that PC more than not. Every bit helps !!!

Keep on Crunching Team

Re: Join The International Team

Yes dogs are nice but it is true that many people turn out not having the time or wish to put down all the effort that is needed. Bad for the owner, the dog and society.

I have just upgraded my PC with some more RAM (2x4GB from 2x2GB) so I may also loose some crunching time due to stability testing since I am overclocking the system also.

The new RAm can't handle quite the same tight timings as my lower density 2x4GB RAM could but at least I have more of it and I am sure that will increase performance more than latency timings. Anyhow, I hace to find that "sweet spot" for these new modules now.

The new Sandy Bridge CPUs from Intel are really something btw, would be grat to put such a system into our team. Still it gets quite expensive to build such a system. I am waiting for the AMD Bulldozer 8 core monsters (hopefully). Will have to wait and see how they perform and if I'll have the cash by then but it surely would be nice :)

So, anyone here thinking about some upgrades?

Re: Join The International Team

You kinda hit it there Leo. I can't in good conscience get a dog knowing I'd only get to spend MAYBE 3 hours a day with it. That is just not fair to any pet.
Gotta git. 4 minutes to finish getting ready for work...yeah right! guess i'm gonna have to start getting up earlier.

I'm not thinking about any upgrades right now. Has anyone ever Crunched using a laptop? Just curious...I bet it would really heat up something fierce.

Re: Join The International Team

Damon, that was exactly what I meant :)
I mean if I would live on the countryside and have a wife and kids I would probably get a dog. So the dog often has people to play with, learn from, cuddle and a nice, large open space to run around on. I do not like when people in apartments have dogs especially in the central parts of the city. Too often it ends up a poor pet that can't strech its legs and considering the thoushands of times more sensitive sense of smell and hearing it is just not fair to keep a big, active, intelligent pet locked up alone in an apartment in a city where the air outside is full of stinky smoke from cigarettes and cars ans industry.

I really would like to have a dog, but I feel that it is not the right time for almost every reason right now... unfortunately many people don't think about the pet so when they go on vacation and have noone to look after the pet they abondon them.

Chris, yes I am crunching occasionally (right now :) ) on my laptop. It works but be prepared for some higher speed fan noise than usual :) but it works ok. Also, since the cpu is a dual core I let it run on one core so the heat is not problematic and the fan is not at its highest speed.

I only run HCC on the laptop since they finish quickly and I do not keep any cache since sometimes there is an interval of time between crunching on the laptop and I do not risk missing the WU deadlines.
