I'm sure it will be quite a task to convince them, but it they say yes what a sense of accomplishment you'll have. The worse thing that can happen is they say no. I think it's well worth the effort. The team will be rooting for you and will appreciate your efforts whatever the outcome....Here's wishing you the best, flodisar !!!

Thank you Chris and all of you for your support!

I have been in touch with them and I received a reply that they would have nothing against running WCG, but that it is very expensive for them to run the computers. They also said that they do have some older servers that will be replaced but are still standing plugged in but not running. The problem is that it costs them around 3000 SEK (or $460) for electricity alone to run them for a year. Also, since those servers are 4-5 years old it seems inefficient to run them from a cost POV considering that the failure rate is higher also on these older servers.

Regarding their new servers, called Neolith, they said that to run that supercomputer costs around 12-13k SEK (around $2000) every day (or around $730k for a year).

But, it is not all lost yet... I replied to his email and asked him about the servers that are just waiting to be removed from the room to give room for new servers. Instead of throwing them away, what if they could donate a few servers to me so that I can run WCG at home on them. Will see what they reply tomorrow. Should not get our hopes up too much but who knows. As Chris said, the worst thing that can happen is that they say "no", right?

Re: Join The International Team

Ok, good news!
It seems that they are more than happy that someone takes those older servers of theirs that they havn't had the time to transport to the recycling centre.

They have like 50 Xeon servers with 2x single core Xeon 3.4GHz with 2GB RAM in each. Also they have some 75 servers with Pentium 4 3.2GHz.

The Xeons are faster at FPU and a little bit newer so I would take those. But I can't run 50 of them :) at the moment but I'll meet up with my contact there on Friday so maybe a max of 10 (incl space servers because they have somewhat high failure rate in hardware due to extreme usage and their age) I can squeeze into my closet :)

So, I'm very excited and hope that it will all work out. i will know on Friday afternoon :)

Oh, I'll have a look at your e-mail JP. The only thing is that I do not know that many students good enough (perhaps one a bit better) but I'm sure that the email is good to have because you never know when it will come in handy.

Re: Join The International Team

Leo I sure wish you lived closer. I'm in dire need of some servers like that, which I can make multi core. Need to downsize my power usage with out decreasing my contribution.

Have a great day.

Re: Join The International Team

yes, I know it would be great to be able to put all of the available servers to good use. Overseas shipping might be expensive though :)
