Re: Join The International Team

Hi all!
Flodisar, it's a great thing what you are going to do. But be carefull - if you are going to pay the electricity bill yourself, make a good calculation of how much it will cost you.
Each Xeon with 2 CPUs can easily take 400-500W from the wall while crunching. (4000-5000W! for 10 of them) At the end it could be cheaper to buy 2 new boxes consuming 400W for both (I'm pretty sure that 2 new Intel Quads would do same job as those 10 Servers).
Please think about it. And good luck here!

Re: Join The International Team

Thanks Krakatuk for your concerns. I am aware that the electricity consumption will go up. At the moment the electricity is included in the rent, but of course they will raise the rent if the electricity goes up.

So, I will ve very careful and plug one machine in at a time and measure the wattage. So, I wil get (hopefully) like 10 servers and they say that the consumption for one server with twho xeon cpus runs at around 300W. At the same time since these machines have a high failure rate he recommended me to take a few exta ones for spare parts such as memory which apparently had been failing a lot at the EOL of these machines.

And, since they are quite loud he said, I will probably won't be able to rund them round the clock either. So I know that the contribution that they add is by no way not as much as if the national supercomputer centre had OK'ed to run it in-house at their place but I figure it's better than nothing and it is the best I can do at the moment.

I know that they are not very efficient but I figure that they aren't that old that they should be thrown away either and also I could need a few servers for some school projects also. One could be a NAS, and then I could have one running as an advanced router and firewall, a dedicated webserver would be nice.... lol :)

Yea, but I will take it easy on them for starters and to get some output probably I will run some HCC that finish quickly.

Before I forget , see here !

Computing for Clean Water Beta test

We have recently started a new beta test on all operating systems. There are 5000 work units to be sent out at zero redundancy.

This test is to help reduce the number of errors members are seeing with this application.

This version will show up as 6.15.

Re: Join The International Team

That's nice to hear JP. I havn't received a Beta in forever,

Leo, I have a Xeon quad crunching. Don't know about efficiency but it sure crunches faster than my deskop which has a faster processor and more memory. Not sure about power rates there, here I can run servers for about $3 - $4 a month each. Yeah, shipping would be high especially if they're anything like the HP LH3 I was using.

Y'all have a great day.

Re: Join The International Team

Great with the new Beta for c4cw!
Yea luckily I do not pay electricity directly but it is included in my rent of around $370 a month. But of course if I were to run all 10 servers for instance they would notice the extreme power increase and would have to raise the rents or something.

So, I won't be able to run that many of them simultaneously. According to the information I receives I understand that they are pretty loud (high performance fans) and each server containing 2 Xeon single core CPUs @ 3.4GHz and 2GB RAM will consume around 300W at full load.

So, if I just try to do a small calculation here...
For instance, running 3 servers x 300W x 12h a day x 30 days = 324kWh/month. Those that do not have electricity included in the rent pay around $0,15/kWh so for a month that is $4,6 which is around $55/year.

On the other hand I visit my parens every weekend so I do not consume that much energy when I am not at my own place, leaving only my desktop on to crucnh.

Hard to knw beforehand how it will play out but we'll see when I have the H/W :)

I just noticed I have managed to pass 2 000 000 points. A great milestone at my current rate :)
Are you guys near any "historical milestones" ?
