Re: New thread for It's raining Dengue, Hallelujah!...

Time for a new thread!!!!

Maybe a monthly thread? Something like "February 2011 DDDT2 Discussion Thread" or "It's raining Dengue, Hallelujah!... Feb 2011"? Just to keep number of pages manageable.

There are threads with several HUNDRED pages

Re: New thread for It's raining Dengue, Hallelujah!...

True, but you're talking about a maximum deferral of 24 hours. There's the rub. I would be mad to run with a cache less than one day under those conditions. Since a cache of 2 days or more will mean that a machine is unlikely to be marked as reliable (effectively can't be, save for errors in the correction factor), that is why I made my statement.

You'll only see the 24-hour deferrals if either:
1: Has 10 connection-errors to scheduling-server in a row, and you can't even download the master-file afterwards.
2: You're only selected to run a project that has little or no work.

#1 has always been present in BOINC-client, actually with really old BOINC-clients the deferral was 1 week if client couldn't connect to a projects web-server when needed, but this was shortened to 1 day. (don't remember client-version for this change).

#2 for such projects cache-size is basically irrellevant, since even with a 10-day cache, chances are computer most of the time is idle, since there aren't any work to get.

As to your other comments, I'm talking about set-and-forget users, not finger pokers. (But even these folks like to collect badges biggrin )

My initial comment was specifically to a "finger-poker", and atleast my opinion is that DDDT2 can't really be called a "set-and-forget"-project... But of course, if it doesn't matter if computer sits idle 90%+ of the time, running only DDDT2 is an option...

Maybe I've not made it clear enough, but as long as you're crunching-away on WCG-work, even if it's not DDDT2, any deferrals due to "no DDDT2-work available..." will be reset each time a WCG-task finish. So, if each WCG-task on average takes N hours, and you're using X cores, normally the max deferrall will on average be N / X hours, as long as cache isn't full, something I'm assuming it's not if you're only asking for DDDT2-work...

Re: New thread for It's raining Dengue, Hallelujah!...

Think that DDDT2 could be reassigned a new class name in project types: "Undulating". Since December 14 we've had uninterrupted stream of validations... and it's making waves. When looking at the Crunching Chart you'll see what I mean ;P
