There is one thing that you can do that will save money on your next cruncher and will allow it to produce more throughput. That is run Ubuntu on it instead of one of the Windows Operating Systems. Oddly enough it is not the Operating System itself that makes the difference but rather the compiler that they use on the science applications.

Using Ubuntu (free opsys) is a bit strange at first but after a bit you get used to it ... at least enough to make it run your BOINC. I do not have a direct comparison but I am guessing that some projects run with between 1.5 and 1.9 times the efficiency.. Producing 1.5 to 1.9 times more work (completed WUs and points for that matter) with the same machine and a no-cost operating system is a really good thing. Dubby talked me into trying it and he was right! I now have two I7s, a dual core and an Atom machine running it. The rest of the machines are at least occasionally used by people (family) that don't want to learn a new opsys or I would have converted those machines as well.

Somewhere between Microsoft and the WCG techs someone should fix that compiler issue due to the preponderance of Windows based PCs. It would mean so much more throughput and decreases in the time to solution. drooling

I am so sorry to hear that you lost so much and yet so glad that you all got out safely. I am sure you will rightly worry about crunching sometime down the road. Anything any of us can do to help?
