Re: Looking for survivors to join Team "The survivors"

Let's do a practice challenge just to see how that goes.

There is a challenge that runs 12/21-12/23 that is based on total points. The challenge was created by someone in China; I would like to kick China's butt, just for practice.

Who knows, it could be interesting to see where the team ranks against other teams.

Re: Looking for survivors to join Team "The survivors"

i would not put BOINC or such to run on SSD's yes they can wear out it is a how often the data changes (why they say to turn off trim and defrag) but if you are changeling data on the drive alot you will be running it very hard and may or may not wear it out quicker

Re: Looking for survivors to join Team "The survivors"

Been running an i7 on SSD about 5 years with no problem other than the capacity was too small.
Run with TRIM on.
Defrag, fetch, prefetch, and superfetch off (although I'm still researching the 3 fetches).

In a few years SSD vs Ram will be moot when the Intel Micron 3D Xpoint (crosspoint) SSD is integrated with new mobo and CPU.
The new 3D Xpoint is 1,000 times faster than Ram and unlike SSD it is not prone to wear out.
Intel expects to replace both Ram and SSD with 3D XPoint.
That will affect speed in a good way.
Ram will be 1,000 times faster and non volatile using 3D Xpoint.

Re: Looking for survivors to join Team "The survivors"

Absolutely not going to Win 10...ever....never....well, mabey sometime.

My i7 cruncher has a 250GB SSD as C: drive, with all programs on it.

All the photos, videos, music, etc are on a 1TB internal WD drive, backed up by
external 2TB WD drives.

I also have the BOINC data directory, and Adobe Premier scratch files, on a small (60GB) SSD that seems to be working fine. If it dies from overuse i'd be really suprrised.

I see we finished 3rd in the challenge. When do we pick up the prizes? biggrin

Re: Looking for survivors to join Team "The survivors"

nasher, they are giving it away because they can't sell it.
My fear with W10 is that everything will go subscription like MS Office.
I don't want to store my stuff on the cloud or any other imaginary location.

grumpy, I have read about prefetch and superfetch until I am surely confused.
I am turning them off and on to see if it makes a noticeable difference with WCG.
Ram is faster than SSD so you would think turned on would be the way to go.
3D Xpoint will make Ram and SSD 1000 times faster, its non volatile, and does not wear out.
Bad part is you will probably need a Xeon CPU to support it.

The prize is kicking a certain unnamed countries butt.
The trial run was over too quickly.
Let's see how a month of Points and Results works this January.
We can run two challenges at once with no effort needed.

Re: Looking for survivors to join Team "The survivors"

nasher, that is a creative workaround.

I backed out the 2 updates, but Windows Update will reinstall if you are not paying attention.

Microsoft changed the classification from optional to important, which will allow hiding the updates temporarily until the next 2nd Tuesday.
