Re: "The survivors"

My sister-in-law brought home an illness from her work.
A week or two later my wife has it.
A couple of weeks after that I have it.
A virus with fever and a bad cough.
It is not the flu (we all had the flu shot) and there is nothing that can be done except let it run its course.
You're not safe in your own home.

Thanks a LOT!

Now i have it!

I always heard you could get a virus on these danged Computy things.

Re: "The survivors"

grumpygrampy,

Stuff happens!
You need to keep your antivirus software current.

I am on the down side of this thing; it lasted about a week.
Everyone else is taking about 3 weeks.
I attribute my quick recovery to all of those years drinking antibiotics (aka grain alcohol).
Have not had a drink in a couple of decades but the immunization lives on.

Re: "The survivors"

I'm back from my trip to NYC for my mom's surgery. It did not go as well as we might have hoped, since the surgeon found more cancer than the scans showed, and had to cut the vagus nerve below her collarbone to remove a tumor that had infiltrated the nerve. He says that he removed all the tumors he could see, but that this does not mean he saw all there was. She has vocal cord paralysis on the side where the nerve was cut, BUT she still can speak and swallow (although she will have to learn some new techniques to make swallowing easier). The doctors are hopeful that the remaining vocal cord will eventually learn to compensate for the paralyzed one, and speaking and swallowing should become easier.

Now we just have to hope there will be no more tumor growth. It is not likely she will be willing to go through this again.

Re: "The survivors"

gretchch,
I know what it is like because my mom had breast cancer.
IMHO there are some positive things that you can focus on:
-she went to one of the top teaching hospitals in the US, and probably the world
-they were able to remove the tumors
-there was no mention of mets to liver, bones, or lungs
-the doctors indicated that she has a good chance of overcoming the paralysis
-your mom has people that care about her, she does not have to go through this alone (very important)

Re: "The survivors"

My mom called me this morning. She is feeling pretty upbeat today because she had a swallow test that went well yesterday, and she is now on a normal diet, eating her first omelette and drinking her first cup of coffee in a week. Even hospital food tastes good right now smile

We will take all the positives we can get... "Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof"

Re: "The survivors"

The team results for one day; run time, points generated, and results returned.
03/09/2012 _ 0:127:14:26:38 _ 466,914 _ 674
At that rate we produce 1 year of run time every three days.

The team rank:
Total Run Time (y:d:h:m:s) (Rank) 77:204:20:40:18 (#547)
Points Generated (Rank) 74,549,469 (#425)
Results Returned (Rank) 133,177 (#486)

Those are remarkable numbers for a small team with 9 members.

Re: "The survivors"

I should be ramping up my output now that I'm back... had everything at home turned off for the week while I was gone. Hopefully that will bump the numbers up a little bit more.

Re: "The survivors"

Replaced my failing Gateway laptop P4 800 MHz with a Toshiba i7 2.2 GHz.
Although rated at 2.2 GHz the Toshiba has been running between 2.6-3.1 GHz.
The laptop runs 20 degrees C hotter than the desktop.
The exhaust air on the side feels like a hair dryer.
I plan to get a cooler for it.
I bought the Toshiba because it has the TruBrite display (gorgeous) and the back-lit keyboard (nice to have in low light).

Downloaded Core Temp from the developers web site and liked it but it was infected with malware- W3i.IQ5.fraud. skull
Found it with SpyBot S&D.

For the Intels loaded Real Temp, for the AMDs loaded the Core Temp Gadget (can't find any malware in either of those).

Re: "The survivors"

yeah, I've noticed that the laptops run a lot hotter too. My Lenovo laptop at work runs so hot when it's running WCG all the time that I have to run it LOWER than the rated speed or the fan can't keep up, it overheats, and reboots itself.

Re: "The survivors"

Bought an Evercool Legend NP-701 but it is useless as it intakes air at the top and exhausts out the sides.
For a cooler to work it has to exhaust air upward into the vents on the bottom of the laptop.

Ordered a Zalman ZM-NC3000U for $34.74 from Sears online.
They also had it for $106 from another seller.

One feature I like is that it has an optional AC adapter so you don't have to load down the USB port on the laptop with the cooler fan.
