Re: "The survivors"

Decided to make some more changes with the i7 build.
This weekend I hope to install an additional case fan, the center Noctua cooler fan, and a Zalman NB cooler on the Z68 chip.
The fan controller will run up to 6 pairs of fans in auto or manual mode.
Not having a problem with temperature, just want to add fans so that they can run at lower RPM to reduce overall noise levels.
Down the road I will increase the CPU overclocking and having plenty of air cooling seems prudent.

Re: "The survivors"

I just ordered the Intel liquid cool fan for mine. Some of the reviews say it runs quiet, some say loud. I guess I'll find out. biggrin

Hopefully I will be able to run it at 4.3GHz after this. The reviews say that I will need to watch the youtube video to figure out how to install it -- apparently the directions were written by someone whose first language is not English tongue

Re: "The survivors"

Picked up a couple of HCC Betas on the laptop.

I am adverse to putting water inside the case.
That is based on my experience with roof and air conditioner leaks.
However, they do make a non conductive liquid that will substitute for water.
If the temperatures couldn't be lowered to a safe level I would consider using the non conductive liquid in a liquid cooler.

Are you using ReatTemp to monitor core temperatures?
With air cooling I am 20C (laptop) and 40C (desktop) from TjMax.
Those temperatures are good!

Re: "The survivors"

I have Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) installed on this box, so I am using psensor to monitor the CPU temperature. It's running at 70C right now, with the fan that came with the CPU; and that's at 3.2GHz, not even the rated speed for my CPU. I'm hoping to bring this way down with the liquid cooler. The whole unit is completely enclosed...there's no water going into or out of the case -- the cooler comes with a fan/radiator assembly (uses propylene glycol) that replaces one of the case fans. I looked at a lot of the big air coolers, but all the reviews said that they can occlude one of the DIMM slots, which would be bad for me, since I'm using them all.

Re: "The survivors"

The Noctua is huge but it clears my 4 DIMM slots equipped with G.Skill Sniper (not the shortest DIMMS).
My biggest fear was that the case side cover would not fit with the Noctua installed, but it does.

My i7 chips have a TjMax of 98C (laptop) and 100C (desktop).
The laptop runs at 78C and the desktop 60C.
I'm happy with those numbers.
If you get near TjMax the chip will throttle back the clock and voltage; if that does not lower the temperature it will shut down to prevent damage.
I think it is unnecessary for me to add more cooling but I can't leave well enough alone.

Re: "The survivors"

Just finished installing the liquid cooler. My core temperatures are now around 50C at 3.9GHz. I'll let it run there for a bit, then look at overclocking if all remains stable.

Re: "The survivors"

It should be very stable, mine has been.
The only problem was an occasional error in validation due to performing Windows updates.
Discovered that it helps to snooze BOINC while performing updates.
It gives BOINC time to write out to the disk.
Windows shuts down for reboot without giving enough time for writing BOINC memory to disk.
This can be an issue when you leave applications in memory, as I do.
That seems to be true for Windows, don't know about Linux.
Good luck!

Re: "The survivors"

It's been a while since I've been here. I'm afraid to disturb the techie things in this lab.
However - and this may be in line with your current preoccupation - I had to show you my new
waterproof cruncher tongue

Re: "The survivors"

Did you pick up the waterproof cruncher on your trip to Sweden?

Yes. In the tunnel part of the connection between Denmark and Sweden
