Re: New challenge : ""our Xmas Gift - Ending c4cw""

Geokamayoc, just to let you know, I'm also crunching C4CW at the moment so as to "buffer myself up to just prior to Ruby". Once there, I plan on trying to change this and 4 other badges all at the same time (i.e. the same Stats update - as described elsewhere).

After which, for me, it'll be "full steam ahead" with all the 4 cores at my disposal (on a 24/7 basis) to just prior to Emerald (my overall long term goal for all projects), although again, I'll just be stopping short so as to try for another "mass badge upgrade". This time, it'll be;
xxxx (nothing to Bronze - I'm assuming that there'll be at least 1 new project by then).
GFAM (Bronze to Silver)
DSFL (Silver to Gold)
CEP2 (Gold to Ruby)
C4CW (Ruby to Emerald)
HPF2 (Emerald to Sapphire)

Re: New challenge : ""our Xmas Gift - Ending c4cw""

Hello gb009761,

you did a good job, however , we don't have the same computing power and the same view about volunteer computation.

I have a small computer, I run ony one project.

I am a scientist in social sciences. Volunteer compuation is a great tool to involve people in humanitarian projects and make scientific results faster. However, I don't think a scientist must consider a project INCLUDING a super-computer.... A good research program is a useful research program, and our work here must ONLY make things FASTER....... I know many scientists who build theirs works asking computing power or money, but not thinking about an ad hoc protocol.

Here, I am a cancer survivor, I am happy with a bronze badge for HFCC and a silver badge for C4CW will make me smile. i choose projects i trust and i give a short help.

Geokamayoc...

I'm a little puzzled over your response to my last post. I certainly don't have a super-computer (and, even if I did - I very much doubt that I'd be able to run it at the moment, considering I'm currently out of work (IBM made me redundant in July 2010)). The one and only laptop I've got, has a quad-core in it (and thus, that's where my 4 cores come from), and the only reason why I'm crunching 24/7, is because my computer is ON for that amount of time/day. After all, if an e-mail/telephone call comes through about a job, I need to be 'on it' straight away...

With regards to the projects I contribute to - I personally consider that ALL projects on WCG are valuable (otherwise they wouldn't have been accepted by the very tight requirements WCG/IBM have). Also, as has been discussed on numerous occasions, providing that we're all crunching, it doesn't really make that much difference as to WHAT we're crunching - due to the 'load balancing' of the 'all project crunchers'.

Finally, I'm glad that you've survived cancer - hopefully, by us all contributing to this and all the other projects that we can (not only within WCG, but other worthy DC projects as well), we'll be able to find cures for 'the Big C' and numerous other long-term issues that the world is challenged with (which, of course, includes a lack of clean drinking water for huge areas of this spaceship we're all zooming around on within the universe).

Geokamayoc... you're doing OK... you're probably around 15 days away from the silver badge? You're almost there... peace

gb009761... hope you're able to pull off your 6x badge upgrade !

Dear gb009761
Thanks for your answer. Of course, all WCG projects have a huge interest , but if I don’t really share your view because I know very well the scientific methodology.
For example, If I give you 1000000 GBP , you can imagine projects you could do….. WE are the one million pounds for scientists, and I don’t like research project which really NEED this power. From my part, a good research project is very practical and if it could be faster with my contribution, it’s great.
I have only a small computer, So, I choose my 2 heart projects !!!!

To cure disease, there is also many answers in traditional medicine. Chinese medicine has had a major job against my cancers.

All the best

CJSL... yes, your are right, 13 days and 12 hours before the silver badge .... With an average around 5 hours a day of results returned for my single project.... I still need Two months before the silver badge. My birthday is april 22 , I will have it for this period ;-)

Re: New challenge : ""our Xmas Gift - Ending c4cw""

Geokamayoc,
Two of my friends went through debilitating cancer: one died and one still lives. These two men are the only reason I chose to participate in grid computing, and why I continue. I am very glad you are a survivor, and I hope our efforts help find a cure; although, I am not sure we have provided any benefit. Just in this project we have contributed over 25983 years of computing time to finding clean water.
Prior to retirement, I designed manufacturing databases and I know that we did not have the luxury to search for solutions that might take more than a day of computing time. In fact, all of our computed solutions were derived in less than 30 minutes and we were looking for improved search algorithms to decrease the time. While this type of search was only done in off-hours, our real time searches for solutions were in micro seconds; therefore, the efficiency of this project raises more questions than provides answers.
I realize there is a humongous difference between ivory tower and real world computing, but this goes beyond anything I can understand.

Dear Thomas,

I am really sorry for your friends.... Our efforts will help to find a cure , AMONG MANY OTHERS CURES which already exist, if we accept to change paradigms. I have been lukcy to find a excellent chinese medicine practicioner.

I like computing power or artificial intelligence, if it help me to be a better human being..... But finding answers is a human jobs, not a computer work.

Best Regards
