Re: Little Mermaid's "inflicting" thread

I don't have anything to say smile

Danish? hehehe I had to look that one up..... No I spent a couple of years in Germany many moons ago whilst in the army so it seemed rude not to try to learn at least a little of the language. Often made more difficult by the locals bursting into English when I attempted a few words...must have been bad at it.

Re: Little Mermaid's "inflicting" thread

I know you looked it up ... but it was nice of you to do that rose
Did you stay at Bergen, Germany?
I was there late last August when the heather bloomed,
and the largest NATO facility is there, and that was audible all over the place.
The number of cars with British license plates seemed to outnumber the German ones.
I asked for directions at the main gate. The guardian sergeant in his snappy red baret
took one all-encompassing glance at my suspicious looking
- but not really dangerous -
little red Suzuki Alto named Rosie with the Danish license plates and gave excellent directions.
It was such a pleasure listening to his English after having spoken sort-of-German for several days.
Yes, knowing just a few words can get you a good deal of goodwill in a foreign countries
- even as you by mutual agreement and to no small relief switch to English after a few minutes

Re: Little Mermaid's "inflicting" thread

I have been to Bergen but back then was living quite nearby in Celle.

A little info. for your edification;

Those wearing "red berets", that are more of a deep wine coloured red, are members of a parachute regiment and are known as the "Red Berets"

Those wearing bright red berets are members of the Military Police.

Perhaps my most memorable attempt at making myself understood was when wanting to buy sparkling water.... not remembering the correct name I ended up asking for "lemonade without taste"

I got my sparkling water to the great amusement of those in the shop. smile

Re: Little Mermaid's "inflicting" thread

His beret was a burgundy red. Thinking hard and with the good help of Wikipedia,
I remember they had the name "Red Devils" written all over the place, so that guard
must have been an ordinary Red Devil doing guard time.

Celle is a lovely place with all those halftimbered buildings.
A carpenter I met told that there had not been any bombardments of Celle,
so the buildings were preserved and now "only" needs maintenance.

Lemonade without taste ... the Germans are pretty tolerant, aren't they?
Do you try to maintain those valuable language skills - or maybe even expand on them?

Re: Little Mermaid's "inflicting" thread

I have retained some ability to read but, perhaps through lack of opportunity, I find it hard now to write or speak all but the simplest comment

25 years is a long time. As is often said, "If you don't use it, you lose it"

Re: Little Mermaid's "inflicting" thread

That's true, OldChap. Don't lose it! Don't lose anything!
Do you have night classes where you live?
I joined one brushing up on my German; we read "The Way Back"
by Erich Maria Remarque and discuss it.
We also watched the movie "The Tin Drum" based on Günther Grass's novel.
But I realise that with English as your first language
and the Germans getting better and better at English
the incentive may be gone ....

OK, I also did a good deal of bickering in my time, so you and I shall not bicker ..... as for me and others?
Who knows?

I'm retired and I received the divorce papers today,
John C MacAlister with the handsome name.
Two very time consuming items out of the way right there ....

Do you remember you asked me how you become a Senior Cruncher etc,
and I told you it was post count dependent?
And you said you would never be promoted from the entry level?
Look at you now! rose
