Re: Time for new project

Great news indeed!
Bring it in. My CPUs hunger for battle against cancer.
I'm first in :-)

BTW what do you think the name for the new project will be?

I'll bet its a GPU focused project...HCC 2?

Terrific news!! my new AMD FX-8350 8 core beast may be ready in time to start crunching this. I will move both NVIDIA GPUs to the new PC and all ATI GPUs to my AMD 1090T. Both AMD A10-5800K PCs are now for sale.

It's in the department of "and now for something entirely different" i.e. not an extension of HCC. Once upon a time uplinger explained that the 1 in the hcc1 was something done out of custom i.e. was not meant to be there. As for the GPU bit, the words in the jhindo post were not totally encrypted "...not at first". From the context, they're looking at the possibility at a later stage. If you ask me, would WCG board a GPU-only project? That's one which could get answered with "If one ever came along". WCG 'hosts' as explained many times, they encourage, they advertise the success, but it's up to the scientists to program the application or use one that already does exactly what they want off the shelf.

Edit: P.S. Like BOINC code is audited, the science apps are too... which is why there's this complicated process of getting the source code, non-disclosure agreements et cetera et cetera. That takes a long time to conclude.

Re: Time for new project

The reason for my theory was because it's being run by the same group as HCC, and they already have a working GPU application. Whether its compatible with their new project remains to be seen.

I doubt. Assuming it is the project described in April's update, the goals are very different. HCC had to do with X-ray crystallography while this new project is designed to "search for prognostic and predictive signatures (sets of genes, proteins, microRNAs, etc.) that help predict patient survival and response to treatment".

Re: Time for new project

To the WCG Team: Could you move the subforums for the projects that have completed to the "Completed Research" forum? HCC, HCMD2, DDDT2 and C4CW?

With the exception of C4CW, this has been done :)

Thanks!

Re: Time for new project

To confirm, the next cancer project is very different from HCC in terms of research methodology and technique. We don't yet have a name, but safe to say it won't be called HCC2. It's also using a different software application so we can't reuse HCC's GPU code.

Re: Time for new project

HBC - Help Battle Cancer.

We had Help Defeat Cancer then Help Conquer Cancer so this could be :-), but probably native speakers will come with something better.

My guess is that it will have GPU part as far as the researchers are already familiar with it and they seen it's tremendous power. The speedup in HCC was really amazing so they probably would like to take advantage of it again. But it are just my guests. I don't have any usable GPU now but maybe in the future I will get one to arm myself for battle against this terrible disease.

Re: Time for new project

I guess if the techs needed some projects to end to get some free time to get new projects online, they definitely have it now. Let's hope nothing happens to FAAH or things will get real quiet around here.
