Re: TEAM Vulture Central III

That's why I always hated Compaq. Dell doesn't use screws.
I have 1G of Mem and it scores 267, it increases your score calculation, but little of that memory is actually used. The only setting you can control that will let you increase your points per hour is the Storage setting (other than upgrading). Go to your device profile and increase the disk size to 10 Gigs max (if you can).
BTW what brand name was that defective 1G of memory?

Re: TEAM Vulture Central III

Everything's a tradeoff. Unfortunately, Dell doesn't use AMD. I had an older Dell that required chunks of Aluminum instead of disk rails.

Everybody wants to be different. The screw heads are under these green fingernails. I'm not sure whether to bend 'em back or pry the panel off somehow. There are also some tabs I found to take off the front panel. That I suppose is where some screws are hiding that hold on the front bezel.

Even the cards were cut back. Instead of a screw on each one, there's a panel with one screw that holds all down. The new graphics card wobbles a little, but I guess that's the way it goes.

A recent computer review said that HP computers were still made so you could mess around with them easier.

The memory was Geil. It seemed to be good quality, and also had a metal box around the memory stick, that stays there. If many computer components go bad, it tends to be early. I'm running it 24/7 to find these kinks.

At least grid computing workunits can give the memory a workout.

confused Re: TEAM Vulture Central III

Thanks retsof,
As you may have read 'elsewhere' I am thinking of building my first website. I'm a little short on theme ideas and wondered if anyone would object if I initially based it on the Vulture Team here. Kinda proud to be a member and we could all benefit - me especially if I can get my head round the ins and outs.

Hi Evo smile

Why not try a weblog thingy first and gauge the feedback you get from that?

If ya wanna laugh you can have a peek at my first (and last) effort.

Re: TEAM Vulture Central III

My crunching profiles are all set to 10Gb storage.

Continuing to exchange parts with Fry's, and probably more to go.
New memory replacement shows the same symptoms....partially boots and starts over.

They don't give me a hassle about bringing things back, but they don't know what their own computers they sell seem to take.

Could it be that they gave me the wrong memory?
It's DDR 1Gb, 400MHz speed. HOWEVER, the bus on the motherboard is 200MHz. That's an ASUS Salmon 1.04. CPU is AMD64 3400+

Could I possibly need DDR 1Gb 200MHz? The board is rated for up to 2Gb, which is only 2 1Gb sticks in 2 locations. We'd like to get 1Gb and the original 512Mb working. I tried flipping them to the opposite places, but it didn't make any difference.

When that was removed, the original 512Mb works fine. A 128Mb Nvidia graphics card is now taking the graphics load, and the computer is crunching faster.

The green things are a "screwless" component mounting system, but they won't work unless there are screws in the floppy drive, and it's not obvious which hole the screw goes in. It grabs the head of the screw "sort of". Adequate, but not great. The one it likes leave the floppy recessed about an inch...the same way a 3 1/2" hard drive would be mounted.

The salesman said we'd need a 5 1/2" rail....but NO. It's a narrow drawer and the recessed floppy goes on one side, and the outer supports for the 3 1/2" cage are in there, and naturally are tacky.

It may come out, and we go with a USB external floppy drive, and put the blank cover back.

Can't hurt.

Yes, you must be out of theme ideas, if you are down to talking about the vultures.

Re: TEAM Vulture Central III

Rets

The board probably doesn't like the two different ram sticks.
Are they the same brand etc?
Have you checked the ram timings in the bios.

Lower HTT.........Memtest.all the usual stuff

Re: TEAM Vulture Central III

thinking Did you try booting with just 1G RAM installed? nerd
Was that Compaq purchased before the merger with HP?

Thanks retsof - Not so much running out, but being cautious about personal subjects. Don't want to reveal everything after all.

If you, or any other members, have any artwork (jpg, gif)etc you fancy seeing on it, you can drop them to my Hotmail. Some of your Vulture sigs have been cool
