Rets Would not boot with 1Ghz Geil memory by itself. The board probably doesn't like the two different ram sticks. Are they the same brand etc? Have you checked the ram timings in the bios. Lower HTT.........Memtest.all the usual stuff I put the original back in. It had a 512Mb 400MHz tag on it, so the two brands don't like each other. The speed of both is what it was supposed to be. Actually, the second didn't like running with only itself. The original is Hynix, a Korean brand. I took out the floppy which looked like crap on the left side of the 5 1/2" space and am back to a black bezel. The slot was designed for a 2nd SATA hard drive, really. I'll get a USB external floppy. The first is 200Gb, so it's got a reasonable amount of space as-is. I'm glad that upgrading computers is so easy now. Was that Compaq purchased before the merger with HP? No. It's one of last week's Compaqs.

Howdy y'all. Just dropped in from the CatsEye Nebula and figured I'd toss a couple CPUs at the project here.
----------------------------------------![]() Retsof, what's the model number of your compaq? I've had two of thier systems, 1 desktop, and 1 notebook. I had soo many problems trying to upgrade them with 'non-compaq' hardware, I'll never buy another. I don't know what they do to thier boards, But you have to choose your parts carefully. My problems with thier systems included memory, modem, and sound card upgrades. |

The HP systems were slower CPUs and the Compaq had an AMD64 3400+ in it. Lessee. SR1550NX? It was a faster machine off-the-shelf, so that's what we walked out with. It's a socket 754 and not a socket 939, but that's the way it goes. We're not planning to do anything with the CPU itself. 128Mb Nvidia graphics card working well. Still working on the memory problem. It's got an ASUSTek Salmon 1.04 mobo. DDR 400MHz memory, but bus is 200MHz. 200Gb SATA HD. Seagate only thing wrong with it.
----------------------------------------The modem is very basic, but works OK. Doesn't even have a phone-out jack. Had to use a splitter. If I have it to do over again, I think I'll go with HP itself and not HP-Compaq. I may be looking at a system for myself, but $6000/year property tax sure takes out a chunk. NO, the house wasn't that expensive when I bought it. $1500/year was more reasonable, and my working salary was actually more than now. http://hp.com has some good deals on customizable systems, with free shipping in the US. Friends have also ordered from these guys. http://www.envisioncs.net They'll usually give you an even better break if you order 2 of the same thing.

Here comes member #18. fingerle 08/15/2005 -:---:--:--:-- 0 0
----------------------------------------He is also in Vulture Central II (seems to be a lot of this going around lately.) I recognized his hat. Howdy y'all. Just dropped in from the CatsEye Nebula and figured I'd toss a couple CPUs at the project here. Great news! Same here.http://stats.free-dc.org/new/teamstats.php?pr...;team=Vulture+Central+III has already picked him up as a new member, so I hope he'll be on the pie chart soon. He's got 8 more hours to hit the team stats for today. I usually can see them within 1/2 hour of 0000GMT/UTC. Member stats show results every 6 hours. Just less than 2 hours from now for the next one. Hmmm... Up to 2gb PC3200 400mhz DDR..
----------------------------------------Try running Everest Home Edition at the existing 512mb and see how it ID's the card. A difference in Manufacturers would explain possible conflicts. However, the 1gig card should have worked by itself. Now with my Compaq desktop, when I pulled a memory change, I had to enter the Bios setup then save and exit before the system would work with the new memory size. Don't know why it made a difference, cause I didn't physicaly change any settings myself. If nothing else, check Bios and see if it reports the proper memory size with the 1gb card installed. ![]() BTW. Nice spec sheet on the system. ![]() |
