Re: Good morning everyone

Good morning all. Hope you get your computer sorted out Steve. I don't know enough about Linux to be able to help.
It is a few years since I used a command line...

Good morning all (my evening). You have no idea how frustrating it is to be sent all of these 'Black Friday' offers and not be able to purchase anything (except downloadable software). They have the same setup (or a copy of the USA set up) here but there is nothing that I want to buy! Ah well, you can't have a tropical climate, tax free income and a low cost of living without loosing out on something!

Re: Good morning everyone

Anyone have any ideas or possible tests for me to try, I am all ears.

Have you tried running MemTest86 on your RAM, Steve (aka DMNI)?

I have and all 4 sticks ran lean, ran the tests repeatedly and all was fine, also ran them at 3200 and they ran clean also. Tried a different version of ubuntu and both problems disappeared. Even with the Nvidia driver.

Am I right in thinking that Mint uses the LTS (16:04) Ubuntu as its base distro? I guess it's not had that particular patch applied?
I'm now using Mint 18.2 myself (following a disagreement with the fall creators update for Windows 10), and I notice that 18.3 is hot off the presses.

Re: Good morning everyone

Good evening team,

I hope everyone is keeping well?

Its good to see the new AMD processor making a excellent contribution to the team. I used to be a big AMD fan but moved away from them as they couldn't keep up with Intel in the performance stakes. Great to see competition back in the marketplace!

My old i3 3225 media PC cant playback 4k videos smoothly so will be in the market for a new PC next year once I cant find a silent GPU with a HDMI 2.0 output.

Yes, that is exactly right, I was using Ubuntu Studio based on 17.10, I'll try mint 18.3 and see if the problems still exist.

Looks like I'll not have to use windows, thank heaven.

Upgraded to 18.3, put the memory in the quad slots and booted up, and both problems are gone, everything is working well so far. Only problem I have is getting my imported ZFS drives sharing via NFS, hopefully will have that fixed before bedtime.

I have been quite amazed by the production so far, I knew it would be good, but it has been better than expected. I did not buy it solely for WCG, so the production will vary of course.

Now I have to do the hardest job I will have all year, maybe even this decade, agreeing with the wife about what colour to paint the bedroom. Shoe shopping is easier!!!

That's all good news DMNI. What I really want to know is, what's the power draw at the wall socket when all 32 threads are going?
Bad news on the crunching front... my team leader has finally found a half-valid reason for not running WCG on my workstation, so that's 8 i7 threads gone. That puts me down to 3 i5 cores, 4 atom-class cores, and 4 weedy Azure VMs. My points outpoint has plummetted :-(
