I wonder if creating something like a Bitcoin pool for BOINC would be useful; basically, you just have to come up with a username and password, and then the pool manager takes care of project allocation. Account Managers like BAM! can make this easier, but from personal experience I know that nothing works 100% of the time, sometimes it takes a bit of kludging and/or brute force to get everything functioning properly. So, have someone at the "pool" take care of the project accounts, etc. for you. I doubt it would take much to get working on the BOINC side, you could use the existing account manager setup but greatly simplify the user webpages.
----------------------------------------Or, I'm sure there are a lot of people who would gladly hand out their weak authentication keys to people who don't really care how their computation time is used... Too bad there's not a version of the weak authenticator for account managers, I'd gladly let other people help me compute :P ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by noderaser at Oct 15, 2014 1:23:17 AM] |

I just want to point out that for all of the great ideas people have presented - and not just in this thread, but going back years - we're essentially talking to ourselves. None of these ideas are ever going to be considered let alone implemented since anything that would be meaningful requires time, effort and expense on the part of WCG - none of which they seem to have until IBM gets involved and actually tells them to do something like run a survey.
----------------------------------------If the time ever comes when WCG is actually interested in getting community input, IOW if the time ever comes when they have the will and resources to seriously consider what we have to say and actually act on that input, I'll be happy to provide as much constructive input as I possibly can. But that time isn't now and it's never been how WCG has operated. Unless and until IBM starts to show some interest in this community beyond running bogus surveys that don't actually address any of the concerns that members have, posting on this forum is nothing but a personal indulgence and complete waste of your and my time. It's not really much of a mystery why so many people never follow through on their initial interest in WCG - one look at how this place is run answers that question instantly. ![]() ![]() |

Every week a facebook post seems to be made with the number of new members such for instance on sep 26, 2014 this got released. Hi all,966 new volunteers joined World Community Grid this week - WOW! Welcome everyone! Have you recruited any new members yet? Be sure to use your personalized invitation link and get recognized for your efforts: From when to when is this calculated and what is the data reference, internal or a public accessible ´community´ page? The date of the facebook post is always on friday it appears, suggesting it's a friday-thursday calculation. When going by the global community page , that members number is supposedly based on those that have at least returned 1 result, good, bad or ugly. On the 18th, the number was 676493 and on the 25th it ended with 677001. The difference is 508. How to get from 508 to 966? The oct 3 fb post says 560, where i get 504 for the friday to thursday period, going from 677001 to 677505. Je ne comprends pas. The new member number tweeted out/posted on Facebook is the number of new members who have registered on the World Community Grid site. It does not reflect the number of people who have actually downloaded the agent. The reason that we don't use the number of new members who have returned a result is that within the 7 day reporting period, not all members have hit the deadline for all work units. A member who joined 30 minutes before the report is run wouldn't have enough time to return anything. Thanks ![]() ErikaT |

Why do you think we had that survey last year? There was a survey? Oooh, what were the results? If you want to know one reason why people stop - its because the projects stop and the new ones are not always enabled. When this new UGM project came along, I discovered it through WUProp. Accessing my account, I had "automatically add me to new projects" ticked but UGM was NOT enabled. If, as one respondent suggests, BOINC is a set up and leave alone system, then as the projects die so will the number of active members because the new projects aren't being added automatically. Me, I'd like to see a lot of changes but I'm a realist. If a website redesign is the response to falling participation, my minor gripes will go unheeded. Anyways, there are multiple reasons for diminishing interest and no amount of us lot discussing it is really going to make a difference. On every project, it is clear to me that on the whole, active admins = active and vibrant projects. ![]() |

So what's next? The research projects will continue to be our top priority so we ask you to be patient with us as we gradually implement the changes outlined above. To help with this effort, we have added two new members to the World Community Grid team, while we continue to balance this work with the normal tasks associated with running and supporting the Grid. These changes will also occur in parallel with the ongoing research being conducted on the Grid, as well as alongside new project launches including a new cancer project coming this fall. The first step will be to implement new features to allow our members to customize what communications to receive over which channels, which we're planning to roll out by winter. After that, we will then begin to unveil our new branding and content re-organization, focusing on one area of the website at a time. These changes will address the usability and accessibility concerns expressed during the study, as well as help us grow our outreach to a wider audience. From that link, it is clear that they have been implementing what they said they would next in response to the survey. And quite frankly that can't be denied. However, what you haven't shown is that they have failed to do what they said they would. What would be nice is to have a full road map presented to give contributors and idea of what to expect. However, just like adding new projects this would only give you more stones to toss when a deadline isn't met to its exact timing... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
