You say WCG must address the security question.....why do you say WCG? WCG uses BOINC so you should be addressing the wider issue of BOINC!

TBMS, security not mentioned is not strange. There is already a vm packaged boinc, since over a year. The sword on this cuts like a mach iii gilette, maybe even a mach v. 1) Projects only need developing 1 science app, linux the preferred and deemed most secure, where for lhc it is the only way to compute for them, it's though not for kiddy machines 2) The increased security ambient this carries along 3) A crunching environment restore, so checkpointing becomes kind of a moot point. Restore the vm and the tasks resume where it left off. 4) Fill in the blanks.
Boinc is a sandboxed environment since very long, where wcg is the only one with the additional https layer, to satisfy corporations, some mondial that volunteer their computing resources and official partner in many cases, some under nom de plum. It's not a secret at all and those who want it can inquire and inform themselves. |

Regardless who should do it, people's security concerns should be better addressed. A layman explanation that is prominently displayed on the download page, would be an improvement.
I knew there was a BOINC and VirtualBox combo, but as I understand it, it doesn't have a full guest OS. I've never tried it, so I don't know how it looks. Also, does it work with all projects? |

----------------------------------------BOINC, the core client, sandboxes the data and science apps by default. An expansion on this is just two clickes away at the 'makers' place of boinc: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/BOINC_Security . Beyond it's a question of trust. Hook up to some project that no-one knows of, peddled from a location you'd not even go in a kevlar suite, and you're on your own. Security is complex. I expect most people will not understand, even the basics. Boinc is a Open Source project. You are welcome to review the source and determine if you see any problem. The science projects are not open source. Those will come down to a matter of trust. Either you trust Boinc, WCG, and the scientists involved or not. I would use the links posted by SekeRob to find out all you can. Good Luck, let us know if you find anything. [Edit 1 times, last edit by TimAndHedy at Dec 1, 2014 6:12:34 AM] |
